Hey guys, I'm pretty new here, and was just after abit of advice.

I'm 17, and have been driving for about 6 months in my beloved Dragon Green 6N 98 Polo and I've got my heart set on buying some coilovers and slamming my car on some G60 Steelies, and was wondering do i take the risk of not putting it on my insurance and what would be the chances of getting pulled and them checking out the mods on my car. Because i know for a fact my insurance will not insure me with Mods (Directline F4gs.).

Any help/feedback is greatly appreciated.

Cheers fella/lasses.

Dom

Run undeclared at your own peril, a traffic cop may check your modifications and either tell you to insure them before he see's you next, or may declare the car as uninsured, impound it until it can be proved that you have insure to cover all modifications and potentially issue you with a summons for driving without third party insurance.

just be wary that if you get caught for insurance fraud when your young, it will be nigh on impossible to insure yourself at a decent price for years.

I got done for an LC20 and IN10 at 17 and was stung for insurance until I was 22!

I'm only going to really be using the car to commute to and from work, with the odd occasional show appearance, not sure whether to risk it or not..

Hmm decisions, decisions..

Police noticing your mods isn't the biggest issue. It would be even more costly and very serious if you were to have an accident. Your insurance would be void and they wouldn't even give you the legal cover that comes free with most policies. If you had to go to court/pay out for causing damage/injury you would be up shit creek. You would have no car, no money and driving would be a distant memory.

You have no chance with mods being with direct line. The best thing you can do is to drive standard until your insurance renewal and then modify. Although insurance is a blag, it is necessary and should be done properly.

Enjoy the simple pleasure of being able to drive and the freedom it brings for now. Hoard parts until your insurance is up with direct line and then transform your car like mother fucking optimus prime.

Hoarding parts is a very good idea ^^

It means that you can have everything for the car and fit it in one day, rather than a long process

Personally id say risk it. But if you were to get pulled etc youd have no-one to blaim but yourself, citing ignorance probably wont be sufficient.

I'm 19, god knows why i put 17 in my first post :S Haha

What insurance company's are best for insuring cars with Mods? Because that's probably the route I'll have to take, I pay monthly so I can pretty much just hop aboard another insurance company if needs be…

Cheers

don't go undeclared... that means your are uninsured and are part of the reason we all have to deal with shitty expensive quotes, you will be no better than those scumbags that drive with no insurance/tax etc... do it properly and legally...

What insurance company or companies are best for cars with Mods?

I've always been with adrian flux and they have always been good with me and cover every mod going. There are plenty of others though man. Shop around. You will be charged something for ending your insurance contract with direct line early whether you pay monthly or not. You should give them a call and find out how much that would be before going any further. Then look for quotes from insurance companies that cover mods.

Its worthwhile doing it right though. Sounds super gay but i know many people getting savaged silly prices to insure shitty cars because they were found to be driving without/void insurance etc.

I never once declared my coilovers on my mk2 gti, I did as the nice lady at Admiral about them one time though. She asked if they came standard with the car, and I said maybe but I didnt know. Got the certificate through and they were down as a modification at no extra cost

If you are going to do it though, I would suggest not slam it into the floor as it just draws more attention. So just leave a slight bit of arch gap and just enjoy the better ride and superior handling

Yeah when i used "Slammed" it was abit of an over used term, just meant, nicely lowering it to a suitable dub level ;). Also is it worth me adding G60's onto the Modification List?

They're only VW steel wheels I don't think that would make much difference at all. You could still mention it but i'd be annoyed if i had to pay extra for that.

wait 6 months, get a yrs no claims under your belt then change insurers?!

Now this will sound silly, what happens if you fit coilovers (as in most cases there cheaper than new VW stock parts) but dont actually lower the car do you still have to declare?

Think about it, really your replacing worn out factory components with new cheaper after-market items, your not actually modifying the look of the vehicle.....

G60's should be fine as there steelies and not alloys.

take the risk, if you dare.

Sorry but driving with undeclared modifications is idiotic and dangerous, try ringing people like Adrian Flux, Footman James and Sky Insurance (Flux and Sky give discount for membership on here, not sure about Footman James) if you want to modify

Failing that, if you can't afford to, don't, it'll hurt more when (not if, when) you get caught with invalid insurance and undeclared mods

i wouldn't go so far as dangerous, how will the insurers knowing that you have modified your car prevent you from crashing?

to be honest it used to be worth not declaring your mods as the police would have to ring the insurers to find your policy details. which 9 times out of 10 they couldn't be arsed doing.

but now with the MID your insurance policy details are no more than a few clicks away.

if someone crashed into me with undeclared mods they'd have more than a financial nightmare to worry about.

transform your car like mother fucking optimus prime.

Amused me!

Also Brentacre have been pretty good with me, cheaper than the ones mentioned above and in fact if you can get proof of a cheaper quote from the likes of Adrian Flux they will usually match or beat it.

Any aesthetic mod is allowed at no extra cost :D

Personally i wouldnt run without declaring it. Not worth the risk hitting another driver and you been forced to pay out of your pocket and done for void insurance.
