Hi all.

In a right mess here.

The outer bearing on my wheel drum is stuck on the stub axle, so i cant remove the drum. Its stuck on and I cant pull it off no matter how i try.

(used two screwdrives to try prise the drum and bearing out together, to no avail)

A mate suggested a slide hammer but I dont have one/ know any one whos got one.

Any other idea's as I was planning on taking it for its MOT next week so was in the process of tidying a few odds and ends up and this has left me right in the shit.

Just hope the stub axle isnt fubard..

Any help??

you could maybe try breaking the bearing up with a chisel be carefull no to damage the shaft or the hub it may work just be careful and wear safety glasses also

First make sure that the hand brake is fully released, slacken off the cable if need be. Working through one of the wheel bolt holes in the brake drum, use a flat bladed screwdriver to lift the self-adjuster wedge, this should fully release the brakes.

If you still have difficulty removing the drum, take TWO plastic or hide faced mallets (hammers if you must!) and strike opposite sides of the drum simultaneously, this should free off the brake.

If the drum still won't move, it is probably due to the bearing(s) sticking on the stub axle, although this is not too common. If it is the case, before you resort to pullers, try striking the FACE of the drum in several positions.

Striking the flange of the drum can end up breaking sections out of it!!!

It is extremely unlikely that there is a problem with the stub-axle itself.

was it spent of grease?

think youll have to try wacking it to fuck with a drift first at different angles to try and free it,then maybe the chisel

youll need a new bearing kit,maybe more depending on damage

I'm not sure whats happend tbh. I've got a new bearing kit, just need to get the drum and bearing off..

worst comes to worst just fit a different stub axle assembly?

Unbolt the stub axle and support the drum over a vice and with a suitable sized drift, drive the axle out of the drum

Yep my mistake I was thinking of a similar problem I had on a Mk3 fiesta and on that the stub axle was bolted on from the rear of the backplate and the stub axle bolt holes were threaded so you just undo the four bolts and the stub axle and drum come away as one.

I think its gone out of shape, and its stuck on like a lip just before the thread of the stub axle

i think i might be able to borrow a slide hammer tommorow.

Was planning on attaching it to two bolt holes on the drum, and then just try and pull it off....

Heat up the bearing thats seized if you have access to oxy-acetalyne or a decent plumbers blow torch.

Got no oxy acetalyne, but can borrow the map gas blow torch from work.

are you really sure it's the bearing keeping it on and not the shoes? Have you moved the adjuster wedge all the way up inside using a pointy screw driver through one of the wheel bolt holes?

I've had this a few times, its usually because some inpurities have got underneath the bearing and stopping it sliding. Best thing to do is put the wheel back on, bolt it to the drum, and then pull and twist on the wheel. Youve got a much bigger area to pull on then, also try striking the back of the wheel/tyre with a mallet to "shock" the bearing.

Good idea! I'l try that! Cant believe I hadnt thought of trying it that way lol!

Failing that I've managed to borrow a "hub puller" off the MOT guy, (who is super sound) so should have it off tonight.

Need to anyway, taking it for its first MOT in 3 years tommorow... *gulp* wish me luck...

SUCCESS! Came off easy peasy with the puller. Seems it was just stuck on a bit of shit as the inner bearing had completely fell apart..

Must'nt of put it back together right...

So I dont make the same mistake twice.... the bearings are slightly coned. They both point "in" towards the stub axle or does the inner one point "out" and the outer one points "in" ?
