Anyone make anything?

At the moment I got a group buy open for a 6n2 gti splitter in carbon that will fit the 6n. Afew people have enquired with me about making a 6n/6n2 bonnet in carbon so this may also be on the cards but also if you wanted a prticular part i can get it made or if you can get a group of people together then it will work out cheaper!

Been done Chris has got a carbon gti splitter and carbon wing mirror covers been done before do look sick.

Are you after real carbon bits or skin wrapped?

I done a couple of skin wrapped bits, need to start it up again to be honest.

Yes peeps before you ask, i will be starting up soon and will be taking on bits. just need to sort my job stuff out then invest in more gear and a better machine polisher!

i was thinking like, bonnet, wings doors bootlid?

I think I'm going to attempt a full carbon bonnet but the problem with it is the overall strength as some people use the bonnet inner frame but i think ill go with just bonnet pins and as many layers as it takes to get it strong but light weight.

See this is a common missconception about carbon fibre. I'm not saying that thickness of the overall part doesnt contribute to its structural integrity, but its primarily down to the directional pattern of the weave and what process is used to manufacture the part that contributes the most to the structural integrity of carbon fibre.

And yes I'm aware that chris has a gti splitter and mirror covers, but its not as if I'm not allowed to manufacture these parts is it!

And i bet chris doesnt have a carbon fibre dash and centre console ;)

But in answer to your question BodyLad. Yes doors, wings, bootlids and bonnet can be done ;)

But that is true i think I've got a lot to research about carbon fibre structure especially with a whole bonnet but I'm sure its not too hard just time consuming.

Massive part of carbon fibre structural itegrity is what the carbon to resin ratio is. You need the carbon pregnated to the right ration for the resin viscosity. Too much resin and the part will end upo being too brittle, it will loose its core flexibility. Too little resin and it will just be too flexible and not have any structural itegrity. The when it suffers an impact doesnt absorb the energy correctly!

There are loads of things to consider, carbon to resin ration, how the carbon is cured, what carbon cloth you use, the resin thats used, what is the tool made of that your taking the part from, what resin was used in the tool. Surprisingly people when purchasing carbon parts forget that the quality of the finished product can only equal the quality of the tool. If the tool is made of a bad quality reinforcement or a cheaper resin is used, this can compromise the intergity of the carbon parts taken from that tool even if the right materials, eg resin and carbon cloth are used for that particular application.

The problem youve got matey is due to the unique nature of the products your asking about they are not available off the shelf. You would have to commission someone to produce a tool of the parts wanted and then pay for the parts to be made. Which is why I said if you wanted some parts would work out cheaper for you to organise a group buy as if you wanted to get the parts for yourself then you would be paying 4 or 5 times what the car is worth in carbonb parts.

At a rough guide price just for parts alone. I would for example make pure carbon bonnet, wings, doors, bootlid at the prices shown respectively £400-£500, £200-£300, £350-£450. £275-£375 so thats roughly £1225-£1625. And thats just the part production alone, dont forget then you will have to pay for the mould's to be made which generally costs at least the same and up to 2 or 3 times the cost of the part from the moulg (this is dependant on what reinforcement is need for the product being tooled)

And thats just the price I would ask for, If you went to a composites specialist then youd be paying through your teeth.

Carbon composite parts are not a cheap things to purchase!

There are ways to reduce costs but wont make a drastic difference!

I'm sure you know matey, but loads of peopl just think aww cool a carbon part without realising the intricacy (sp), processes, skills and engineering that goes into produciong carbon parts, even carbon cosmetic parts let alone high end carbon kevlar and aramid composites that are used by the automotive and motorsport industry for structural components such as chassis's and critical crumple zone body parts such as bumpers, bonnet etc.

People who buy carbonthink it is over priced, they fail to recognise the skill and cost in producing these parts not to mention its the creme de la creme of composites and materials used in the automotive industry. Right I'm going to shut it now, could go on about carbon all day long :p

Agree with the gent tbh matey, either vinyl wrap or if you want genuine carbon get the parts you want done such as bootlid etc carbon skinned which can still be a costly procedure :p

As i am building a track/ fast road polo so light weight parts are necessary also its being one of the few people to say hey i have an entire carbon fibre bonnet or wings etc cant you use the actual bonnet and lay the carbon fibre over this to use the bonnet as a mould and then layer the carbon under the initial first layer to build up a similar thickness?

You could use the bonnet as a male mold yes, the only problem youve then got is your finish would be shite as I can pretty much guarantee the paint quality wouldnt lend itself well to the finished surface of the carbon. If you were going to paint the carbon shouldnt see it being an issue, but if you want to leave the carbon plain, then the little bonnet dents and rough surface of the bonnet could lead to weave distortion and air bubbles in your epoxy, especially if your wet laying the carbon by hand! Would at the very least need a vaccum bagging system to squeeze the excess resin and air out of the carbon.

Well unfortunately no one does off the shelf carbon parts for the polo. They can be made no problem thats if your willing to pay.

Like I said I've had afew people ask about 6n bonnets in carbon fibre, will probably make a mold up and produce afew of these if your interested, could let you know when its going down if you want?
