today on my travels in my mk1 golf i happened to get stopped by a friendly neighbourhood policeman....

He approached my drivers door and started on about how my wheels were illegal because they stick out. I then uttered about the fact that the tyre tread is covered by bodywork, ergo are not illegal. He then said that if i was to hit a bump that the tyre would catch on the car bodywork, then it would result in a crash, though i know full well that they wont, rolled arches, camber etc... he said that due to the wheels sticking out that they were illegal. He then mentioned the camber and said that it was illegal, so i told him about the camber shims used to step out the bottom of the tyre, which again he said were illegal...

He said a simple answer to the problem would be wheel arch extensions, which wouldnt make any difference to the tryre tread being covered, as it already is. Anyway, i got away with a caution and a producer for a balding tyre that needs replacing.

Just needed to have a rant and also ask if anyone has had any problems regarding camber?

I've had exactly the same thing happen. Sat in the back of the police car for about ten minutes while they looked through the constructions and use book. Eventually gave up and let me out Twats. So many of them try and make up laws on the spot to catch you out

You are innocent of any crime until:

A) You are proven guilty of breaking a particular law, by judges, in court.

B) You voluntarily admit an offense, and voluntarily surrender any penalty. This by agreement, out of court.

You'd be amazed at how many thousands of complete and utter mugs go for B. The police depend on it.

They're trained to blag you, they're salesmen, paid to collect targets and revenue. But if you believe a court can't find you guilty of anything, if you believe the police can't prove a case against you, then you'd be wiser to wait for the court option.

I've fallen for b once when i was driving a works van they pulled me over and said "do you know why we pulled you over" to which i replied yeah i ran an amber light as it was changing to red then i explained i was delivering urgent bloods and samples to a hospital and the junction was rubbish with no filter light they looked at the bloods which were on ice and let me go saying dont get caught again and have a safe journey

been bollocked by them in my younger days a driver,had to bite my lip a few times too.

but there paid to do a job,and have to follow rules.and as mikey says dont give them much..

so if your bang to rights they will have you,if not they will try to get something out of you,or bollock you..

got pulled lots for various things for the first few years and beyond,but always spoke in good terms to them,and accepted a bollocking from them also,if they think there balls grow from the power of there job then thats fine by me i continue on my way so dont give a shit

got a lovely bit of information from a guy on edition stating about how wheels can protrude 30mm from the bodywork, and have all the stuff i need to show him next time he pulls me over :) got my tyre sorted too, but like you all say, gotta bite the lip hard to make sure you dont admit to anything

Yup, if they think its dangerous they will either call out a vosa inspector to go over the car with a tooth comb or just give you ticket for it and tell you to take your piece of paper to court with you

On your own post, i'd point out that if the cop thinks your car is dodgy, he can keep pulling you until he's blue in the face and is doing overtime processing the paperwork - if he can't PROVE it's dodgy then he can't do jack shit.

the 5-O don't have to have any reason to pull you, hell, they could pull you because your car's blue if they wanted to!

some cops will follow you for a while to see if you make any mistakes or they see anything untoward, some will just pull you because they've had a 'feeling' something might be wrong.

if there's nothing wrong with the car or the driver or documents etc, there's no issues, it's delayed you for all of 10 mins and you're on your way again - at least that way, you KNOW there's nothing untoward with the car (i.e. Drug Markers from a previous owner etc)

People put wheels that are too wide for their car to get attention, then get the hump, when the only attention is from the local plod, rather than the local clunge.

Everyone knows stretched tyres and overly wide wheels which poke are going to get the bored police interested, legal or not.

I doubt the cops will give a crap about getting payed overtime to fill out the paperwork for pulling someone over, money for old rope!

I wouldnt want to be relying on such info when faced with a plod whos probably got nothing better to do, but then I dont drive round in a car with wheels too wide for it, so I dont have to worry.

You're certainly not wrong! A knobhead policeman will dismiss any paperwork you show him whether it be right or not, and point you in the direction of the courts.

There are a lot of links shown about on the internet that are from old versions of the Constructions & Use regs, and therefore rules may be clearer in the newer version which the policeman may actually be aware of.

If they are saying its wrong, then they are giving out false information on there own site. Either way, that piece of paper is your get out of jail free card lol.

As either they have misled you by giving you false information (therefore you aren't in the wrong) or they were just wrong in the 1st place.

The fact u have a piece of paper, showing you have done some sort of research into it to make sure your not in the wrong, speaks volumes to a copper IMO

I'd imagine pulling out a piece of paper on legislation and correcting the copper, telling him he's wrong, is only going to wind him up, regardless of if he's being a dick or not. He'd have to be pretty sound to accept that he didn't know the law fully and leave it at that. Wouldn't be surprised if most would then proceed to go over the car looking for anything else that they could pull you up on!

rozzers pull me once, I was driving like a idiot, I was decent to them and they didn't say anything about the puddle of oil and coolant forming under my mk2.

I don't need a bit of paper to avoid getting in trouble with police, I just happen to be nice to them and get away with stuff.
