Thanks bud.

Got the head on today; getting it timed and hopefully getting a throttle cable run tomorrow after work; hoping i don't run out of light!

Getting a manifold started on Sunday, but seeing as I don't have the carbs yet (were posted friday); it won't be completed. Manifold total cost - nothing. Easy.

Then the dizzy on Monday, get it all back together.

Hope to have it back on the road on Tuesday; or Wed! Boom.

Where did you get the bathhurst's from pal? i know you've had them ages i just really want some haha they are proving hard to find,

cheers

Got it timed too, and all the belts on.

I'm looking at getting rid of them too; front tyres need replaced though. Got swaps?

Had alot happen recently, got it all back together, and got a manifold made up.

Got spark too, and then the brand new dizzy gave up? So it's running off the standard AFH just now, obviously static timing doesn't do it much hope. But, it runs. Well, ran.

Being the spack that I am, I forgot to make sure the crank bolt was FT and it came off. :/ so, the head came off, and I'm 6 valves down. :/

But, it ran, and it sounded fucking gorgeous!

Took the head off today, it's getting sent away, will get some pictures up later.

So, got it running again today, sounded lovely on the carbs, a little tweaking and then the vac adv dizzy chucked it, so the AFH one is on running static timing. Drove it about like that, went and got petrol, then work and went for a drive after.

Wasn't heavy footed at all, then went up a hill, it started to run on 3, and then it just locked up.

Oh, no. That was Monday night, got it back last night and tore the head off it, it's bent YET ANOTHER 4 valves, and piston 2 has dropped into the crankcase. I'm actually having no luck.

Had a massive discussion about breaking it/setting it on fire for money from the insurance and nothing seems viable..

With no money, I'm out the game for the next few weeks. Need to get the head fixed, another belt, gasket, and trying to pick up Saf's block this weekend/Monday.

I want to throw the towel in!

you are almost there mate, don't give up just make sure you take your time

I've heard that so much recently, thanks! Gonna take it off the road for a few weeks I think and do without, start at the back and just work forward, fixing everything..

Mum suggested I break it and sell what I can, and buy a Ka or a Corsa. I honestly couldn't though, mines so close!

So, everyone likes carnage, so have a peak:

Engine out in an hour..

Got it tipped on it's side and there was a horrible sound of shrapnel falling around the bottom:

What was in the sump:

A piston wedged under the bore:

Pumped snapped off its mounts:

Fried and shattered big ends:

Notice the snapped big end bolts, etc:

The sump had punch marks. These engines will not take boost and this is why!

Such a mess! I actually cried last night.

It's a sad day.

And the award for most spectacular engine failure goes to...

Was there no sign that things were going wrong? No knocking or owt? How long was it running on 3 before it locked up? When it was running on 3 was there no knocking?

  • Author

I know man, tell me about it! Erm, nah, it started to run a little rough and then 200 yards down the road it just locked up on me - the piston dropped into the bore.

I would honestly expect it to be running like a bag of nails for ages, but it showed no sign of giving in till the last second..

When it was running on 3 I backed off and was planning on just getting it to the carpark to see what was wrong and then it just locked. Sad face! :( Don't have any blocks kicking about, do you man?

the car itself is looking good! feel for you though dude, i know the pains of having to take out engines and swap things about and put them back and still not working (had a classic mini a few years back that i built an engine for and it just started smoking like fuck one day and never figured it out). thought about buying an mot fail valver or something, taking the engine out of it and splitting the rest to make money back? that way you'll be able to hear the engine running before

Bought a rebuild block off Steve (Stevo Trendy); so cheers for that man!

Cleaned up the box, new seals and all that:

And the misses came over last night, and being the little grease monkey she is, helped my throw the new one in.

So got it all in last night, tidied up the rest of the loom, carbs back on and tried to fire it! :( Was a no go. Until I realised the dizzy had the leads on the wrong way.

Fired first time! Boom. Take it.

unlucky with all the problems mate, but I'm glad youve stuck at it and got there again :)

you still running the mk4 dizzy with static timing? iv got a new (well done about 100 miles) pattern dizzy if you want it cheaper than new?

hopefully you have more luck with this one than the last ;)

i admire your determination

Thanks man, didn't really know what else to do. It's had too much money to throw it away just yet. Had no car for nearly 3 months though, uni takes up most of my time. It's really close now mind! :)

Yeah, it sucks ass man! I've got a MK2 but the hall sensor is gone so it's more than useless to me! :/ Now I just need to tune the sod and find me a wideband.

The amount of stuff you've done though scares me a little! :/

I love the colour of this :). Feel sorry for all the hassle you are having with it, though.

It's such a lovely night and I'm stuck in studying:

IMG_2037.jpg

Still needs cleaned here!

IMG_2039.jpg

My dad went to GSF today to get bits and they've sold the last of them, even though my name was on it! They were so apologetic about it they said they'd get a member of staff to drop it off AT MY HOUSE!

Also discovered this:

So I might have to take the fecking box off again! :(

So that's a bonus..

I'm thinking about puting a AFH in my 6n2 but not to sure after seeing the amount of the trouble you had!! The last time i sore your thread you was pulling the old lump out you have done loads since then! Good job for sticking it out though. Iv got a build thread on a mk3 section but really not sure to put it in the 6n2 now in got the engine, manifold, loom, dizzy, amp, coil so got got most of it. What did you do about drive shafts? Thanks bud

Dude I'm confused why you're messing with a crank sensor?

i apprecate that that was a bummer n all, and bad luck to you, but an engine going bang that much is fucking cool! lol

The driveshafts are the same man, I've used 1.0 ones and the 1.4 ones.

Dude I'm confused why you're messing with a crank sensor?

Cause the 6n2 ECU uses it to work out revs! And it's something i'd like to have. It also means I can use it for MJ or the likes. I think. But so far, for revs!

I swear your the only dude who has a build thread with a AFH in there 6n2! I'm pretty sure I'm gonna take this route! You gonna get a 421 manifold?
