Today, I built my own vacuum advance distributor, as the last hall sender packed in.

The guy at the scrappy let me have the hall sender off a MK3 Golf, and, after a little tweaking, some re-wiring and footering, and got it mounted into the advance unit.

Runs alot better now, but why are the slots in the way of the mounting holes?! It runs best just as the slot on the dizzy ends, and obviously I can't put a bolt through there. :(

Today, I cleaned it, made myself an OEM Flipkey fit the Rclick stuff. Picked up some engine covers and tarted them a little; tweaked the timing by ear and it pulls lovely.

Got myself a new expansion bottle because the old one was letting the bay down a bit. Just need an AFR Gauge now..

It's clean:

Sorted the throttle cable because there was a notch and it was doing my box in:

Well that never lasted. My clutch has shat itself. Obviously the thought of 60bhp has scared it away.

So thanks to Sonneti, he's posting me a clutch, that's that sorted! Thanks buddy.

Now I'm just gonna enjoy it! Get the front end tided it; it's nearly there! :)

whats going on with all the ports on the switch blanks ?

looks intresting :L in car computer ?

  • Author

Yeah, got it in one man!

I've got a baby atx board that sits lovely behind the centre console, all plugs in, then a touch screen that sits above the stick. Only the drive packed in, so it's out of use just now! :(

Because Micra:

328036_2351462803476_1410712593_o.jpg

Started at 3pm, had everything ripped out the bay and the box out by 6pm. And that included going back to my house to have my dinner..

Everything came off, except the hubs, which, when pulled seemed to pull the whole flange out and then it shat it's box oil all over the floor.

Hey mate, nice build and liking the conversion.

quick question how was the AFH swap and what carbs are you running?

any issues with the install or anything such like... thinking about the same swap for my polo.

reply in a pm if you wouldnt mind mate.

cheers!

The swap wasn't too difficult. Have a look at building a throttle pedal. I just had problems cause I kept blowing them up! CBR600's, homemade mani.

Works really well, still not getting bored of the noise; it's totally different to a shitey airfilter!

Well, she's passed her MOT today! Only an advisory on the ball joint, which I'm replacing just now! :)

Another year safe!

Wahey, good to see it's going strong mate!

I never have enough money for this! :(

Front end is going in to get sprayed next Thursdayish.

Managed to get new top mounts fitted as the old ones were old. I like new stuff. Whipped the Weitecs off and cleaned then up, they're an awesome bit of kit, cracked with just my hand! Never, ever, ever going to buy cheap suspension. Buy once, buy right.

Brakes are feeling good too tbf, very good when they're hot. Now got 280's on the front!

Got a 1.6 crank and pistons waiting to go in too, when money agrees.

Stuff's starting to get interesting now. Getting bored of having a distributor, and want to go to a coilpack/ECU'd control. Can't afford megajolt or EDIS.

So why not use the ECU already in the car!? The Bosch ME7.5 ECU seems to be a clever bit of kit, and I'm starting to learn how to reverse engineer the code to get it to do what I want.

Removed the MAP sensor from an old manifold I had, so I can get that connected up, measured the resistance of the throttle plates from an old Throttle body. Connections 3 and 5 are the feeds for the motor.

6 and 2 are common between both tracks - sharing a resistance of 1.1 kOhms.

Pins 1 and 4 are the main tracks, pins 4 reads 330 Ohms closed, 0 ohms at full throttle.

Pins 1 reads 0 ohms closed, 330 ohms full throttle.

Looking at fitting a variable resistor that'll tell the ECU where the plates are; the MAP sensor should give a steady timing reference.

Need to hook up a resistor so that it knows the load on the throttle pedal from the DBW system, same idea as above. Mounting 2 TPS's on the same carbs might be hard though..

So, was trawling through Josh's 20vT build and read this:

fuel pump is working :D ! turned out to be a dodgy relay so was a quick fix as i had spares :D

first time I've heardit running tonight and now i just can wait to get it finished, DBW is next on the list, so if anyone has an idea on that  let me know

So he had the car running WITHOUT the pedal connected, no-one would answer if they had. If it runs, it means it's got a steady ignition table. Who knows if it advances, it doesn't matter, it runs.

And I've got the kit there, so I'm gonna try.

All it needs is the map sensor and the TPS. Maybe a knock sensor. Would be pretty cool if it worked..

Sounds interesting man :) good work with this!

Will be interested to see the results!

So I picked up a set of xenons from my mate, was getting bored of a poor beam pattern from the eGay HID's.

They're still full of water after I cleaned them and their backs. Got some detailing done on the backs too so they're clean when they go in. Needed a bit of cutting on the slam panel to get them in though.

The same guy, a Mr Greg Lee also donated a set of mats from his Gee Tie, so that was lovely of him.

Got my AFR gauge fitted and started playing:

Cleaned up the bay with a battery cover and fuse box cover. VW wanted 68 quid for it. I pinched it off Greg.

After polishing up, she's pretty again:

Getting an R8 oil cap soon too.

With the gauge fitted, a little video:

Looks really tidy mate!

From our conversations it doesn't sound like your fuelling is too far off either :)

The cover is off the dizzy cause I've been messing around with it so much man, gonna put it back on soon.

Just ordered a set of new bulbs for the front, that was an expensive setback! :(

Gonna move the ignition module I think, tidy the bay a little.

Spray the mounts and put stainless items on there.

Other than that, I thinkkkk it's nearly finished.

Fueling is good once it's warm (she'd cooled by this point). But yeah, AFH seems stable man.

Gotta remember this is only a 1.4, I keep expecting miracles.

Been really enjoying this recently, every time I jump into it I just don't want to sell up.

Cracked off the coilovers today, cleaned the calipers, polished the rocker, etc. Have a slight problem with a sticky caliper, but I'll sort that tomorrow.

Gonna put my holiday pay through tomorrow, so I should be able to afford the front end spray.

That, and I got a fine for having proper OEM xenons. Wanks.

Found a really good timing spot, and it now pops pretty much every time I come off the ignition and come back on. I don't have a timing light, should probably invest.. :p

But yeah, found this spot and it's really pulling hard. Idle is now 12.5 AFR and goes kinda lean the whole way through what.

Now finding what a little unstable, gonna black the air jets like Yarris did and see how that fairs. Then up the jetting a notch, see how it goes then. Very happy with it though, tbf.

  • Author

Copied what the internet said and blocked off the emulsion jets.

And oh my God, it's so much better. The engine is so much more urgent, I love it. :)

A lot of work gone into this, looking so nice!

Well, the big ends have gone, have no idea why.

Started tapping and meh, it's shit itself.

Dropped the box and engine today in and hour and a half, without a crane, I'm getting too good at this.

It's 1.6 Hybrid Time.

Looks awsome man shame about the engine going again
