I've just noticed an issue on my 6n2 16v (AUB 100 bhp).

At low revs in first gear (clutch engaged) I get a high pitched whining noise coming from (I believe) the transmission. If I take my foot off the accelerator in higher gears I get a high pitched scraping noise. It's not very loud (i.e. I can't hear it with window open or music on). Take my foot off the gas, I hear it - engage the clutch and it goes away. There's also a possibility that whatever is causing the noise is happening even when I accelerate because I wouldn't hear it over the engine noise. :(

Clutch was replaced ~10k miles ago and otherwise fine. I tried dumping the clutch at 4k revs in 4th gear and it stalled fine - no slippage.

Any ideas?

Is this the same problem that kills GTI 'boxes? I thought that was exclusive to GTIs. :@

Haven't got round to checkout/replacing oil yet. Can you tell me how you check the gearbox oil level?

So today I noticed that the noise was getting worse and that I could hear it over the wind noise with the window open. The noise changed from a consistent scraping to random clunking. It sounded like something was loose somewhere. It sounded like my undertray was scraping on the floor again but, alas, it wasn't. :(

So I took it for a quick test drive again and decided to dump the clutch in fourth. It made a horrible sound and I thought I'd successfully destroyed my gearbox but the ratting sound has gone and has been replaced by a VERY loud whining in ALL gears (including reverse). It happens irrespective of coasting/decelerating - disengaging the clutch no long makes it go away. :(

So what did I do? Something obviously gave way/shattered/broke but I can still select gears and the clutch still holds. Apart from the noise I'd say it was otherwise fine. :S

Could be the diff or bearings. Oil level - you have to remove the big plug on the side of the gearbox (upper one, looks like a giant allen key grub screw). the oil level should be right on the bottom of the thread of that hole (I think). you need a special tool to remove the plug. someone else might know better as my experience is with 86c/6ns..

Drove it to work this morning. Started off with loud whining on overrun, then the knocking/clunking noise got louder and louder. Sounded like the gearbox internals clunking around. Then I lost drive in 4th gear. >.<

Time for a new box! Bad times. Relatively easy job though.

Scraping noise when decelerating in gears up until today, loud whining noise when decelerating with the clutch engaged, getting difficult to select gears, and jumps out of reverse, gearbox gone on mine as well?

Does anybody know which gearbox codes will fit my AUB? The sticker in the book says ETB but I've seen some on eBay that claim to replace multiple boxes, including CWX and ETG.

I've had a refurbished gearbox fitted! A couple of problems though:

* Gear selection is very difficult in first and second. The gearstick looks like it's misaligned e.g. when it's in first/second, it's central rather than pushed to the left. How can I adjust this?

* Whistling in fifth gear. :( It's not whining... more of a whistle. Comes on with the throttle, stops immediately on backlash. Vacuum leak? Can't hear it in other gears either.

Also... slightly unrelated... anybody know a good place I can get the front wheels aligned in Birmingham, both camber and toe?

Sounds like the smae noices as my 1.4 8v 6n was making but then i lost drive and gears so changed box, driveshafts and its runnin sweet now, i got a 1.4 seat box in and it is alot smoother then the standerd vw box :) (Y)

I've rebuilt three gearboxes now - if they're well rebuilt, then they do last a while (and I seriously abuse mine). Cost of all the bearings and shims is around £230 and it takes a couple of hours to strip, clean and then rebuild the gearbox. £350 isn't a bad price, I was quoted £330 from a place in Newark

I've had two secondhand boxes, one that was sold to me as a "recon, good condition" 'box, lasted 50 miles before whining like a bitch. I'd rather buy a knackered 'box and rebuild it myself now that I've got the tools

apparantly the boxes themselves arent weak, they have poor seals (normally the selector shaft oil seal) so un noticed leaks leave the box running dry and eventually the main shaft bearings collapse and take whatever else is spinning around with them. mine has 173,000 miles on its back with no rebuild as yet but 5 new seals, and no whines/grinding at all
