9N Main Beam Bulb Replacement - HELP!

Featured Replies

Right losing the plot trying to fit a headlight bulb in the 9n...

Cant see how it clips in place at all, its the drivers side that I am doing but the even looking at the passengers side that has more visibility I cannot make any sense of how the bulb is retained...

Anyone got any clues... a little stuck with being able to drive home from work etc...

Any help appreciated!

Nearly a decade ago, a motoring journalist was testing a 9n and it's headlight bulb blew.

He reported how it's an offense to continue the journey without replacing it, and stated how he tried in vain to do so at a petrol station but had no chance.

The next day, he was told by his VW dealer; "You'll need to bring it in sir, as it's a specialist job"

He went on to print, in the mag, "Why is it a specialist job, Volkswagen?"

I don't know their reply. Or why other manufacturers made the same mistake which caused many of their customers to break the law.

But i do know the 9n was a strong, early example of the phase.

Ha ha excellent stuff!!! I think if I pop the expansion tank off I should get a much better view... so will give that a go tomorrow...

there just looks to be nothing logical that will retain it...

cheers,

Via google...

"I removed the bumper as a last resort, but there is a much simpler way.......

Refers to a 2003 polo 1.2

Remove the rubber cover from the back of the bulb.

Pull off the connector (may need a wiggle as you pull as they are quite tight)

Looking inside (may need to use a mirror) there is a black plastic ring, which has 2 torq screws diametrically opposite. These screws must be loosened, but not removed so that the black plastic locking ring can be turned. Turn the locking ring anti-clockwise only a little, there will be a little click.

The bulb is then free to come out.

Refitting is simply the reverse, but do not touch the glass on the bulb.

Make sure the lug which sticks out on the backplate of the bulb goes to the top

Turn the locking ring clockwise and nip up the 2 torq screws, but dont go mad!

Refit the connector and the rubber plug

Done!

Should take 5 mins rather than the 1 1/2 hours to remove the bumper and light assembly!

Best of luck"

PoloD.

I used my iPhone to video the inside of the headlight unit. :) can see everything then
