In my military career i have had the pleasure of going to some wonderful places and meeting new people. In the army's infinate wisdom they decided yesterday to tell me i have been posted to Hameln in Germany on the 21st of November.

Could someone give me some tips on what i need to do to my car so i can drive it over there? i.e Lights ect....

Also i just re-newed my insurance with elephant and decided this year, thinking i was staying in the uk, to pay the full ammount in one payment. Can i still use this insurance over there or am i going to have to cancel and get new policy out.

Granted, but they will pay me an extra £380 ontop of my monthly wage (after tax) and pay for my fuel and expences to move all my stuff out there.

You will have to ask your insurance company, mine only gives 30 days cover.

Check with the insurance company.

Some of them cover you outside UK only for limited time.

Before you drive there buy the light blank sticker so you don't have any issues there with police..they are quite strict.

All the rest should be fine because it's applies to UK policy(where the car is registered and insured) and not to the German or EU.

You'll have to get the car BFG'd if you intend keeping it, fitting lhd headlights, carrying an approved first aid kit etc. The test is similar to the MOT but a little stricter. You'll also have to take a BFG tick test to get your BFG driving license, without getting your car and yourself BFG'd you wont be entitled to fuel coupons (if they still do them, used to be about £1-50 for 10ltrs). Plus you need your BFG license to drive military vehicles there.

When you go over they only give you a couple of months to get these things done, otherwise you can no longer drive over there, and they can remove your car pass, stopping you from parking on base.

Did two tours at Bruggen, and took my proper driving test in Monchengladbach. Nothing wrong with most of the Germans, some of the immigrants can cause issues though.

I've been told i need to get it BFG'd by my troopy. They do still do them, or so i have heard. Will i also have to re-do my FMT? do you have any idea how long all the paperwork takes to sort out as i know for a fact that i only have 30 days to get my car and myself BFG'd.

I've heard mostly good things about Germany. It's the extra pay which has lightened my mood about the whole situation. Just means i'm out in Afghan again earlier than expected and it's rumoured that we are doing talisman which is abit rubbish as I'm rather fond of my legs.

Once you've passed everything paperwork is about a week, can send off for each bit as you pass it though. Shouldn't have to redo your FMT as all that is required is a BFG driving license to back it up, though they may send you on a short fam drive. Might be worth asking your MT section here if they have the BFG discs, and getting in some practice before you go over

Best bet is to get your headlights, and possibly rears if you have fog one side and reverse the other, before you go over and get them fitted. There used to be someone over there who had a stock of various lights, worth asking someone if they are still in business

they don’t stop you parking on base they stop you leveeing in your car happened to my Clio after i left the forces i when back to get it from Osnabruck and was told because it’s no longer BFG'd i couldn’t take it from the camp and would have to re new it this is 12 month after leveeing i might add lol so i ended up leveeing it there god knows where it is now.

But on the headlights its best to keep a English set to hand for return visits to the uk fit them as you get off ferry keep the police off your back over here to nothing more than a English plate car registered in germy that they like to pull over 2 weeks levee 26 times pulled over was not impressed but seen the funny side eventually

i would say do what i did but it anoyed both german and english police had headlights one english one for german roads on the car
