permanent 12v for radio memory

Featured Replies

This is on a Lupo 1.4 16v.

I've wired in a headunit. It's wired so it'll turn on and play without the key in the ignition.

I did this to stop it forgetting programmed stations when you turn off the engine and leave the car.

I'm fairly confident about my ISO wiring connectors.

The radio was definitely off, but the battery has drained flat in three days of standing while I sorted out some brake slide bolts.

Weirdly, whenever I opened the car door, like when I wanted to pop the bonnet or turn the wheels to get at the calipers i could hear the fuel tank pump pressurising - with no key in the ignition.

I'm sure it didn't do that before I sorted the radio...

Is the 12v I chose for radio memory retention somehow telling the rest of the car the the ignition switch is at first detent (the ACC position)?

Where else can I get permanent 12v from?

Actually, the ciggy lighter looks like it's always live.

And while I'm here

Where have VW hidden the fuse boxin a Lupo?

There are some on the a battery in the engine bay.

But not all the rest from the circuit diagram.

Fuse box should be on the right hand side?

the fuel pump primes when you open the door on my mates 2000 MK4 golf, so maybe its normal, but you couldnt hear it before?

if only rich were allowed to post....:ninja:

isn't is on the right above your knee under the headlight switch.

Rich would know :paranoid:

all you needed to do was swap round the power to the headunit to keep the memory, it should tell you in the radios manual, all the radios i have brought have told you how to do it

most tell you, if the radio loses the setting with wiring red to red yellow to yellow you need to swap them to red to yellow and yellow to red

Yes he would. There was me searching in the engine compartment and behiind the bulkhead like an old Polo.

Found it behind a flap left of the light switch.

Inside the car, now that's luxury.

Thanks for links and advice.

The radio has a a circuit diagram of its connections, so it seemed obvious enough without resorting to the

Japlish manual. I use a multimeter to find 12v because I find it hard to tell red from brown and green.

Swapping was what I kind of thought, but the previous owner also appears to have bodged the antenna amplifier connection into the red wire, rather than using the signal out from the radio (blue) to power/raise aerial as and when needed. So with radio able to turn on without ignition key the antenna amp was still always drawing current, but only 20mA say. But a 45Ah car battery should last a few weeks with that load.

So, recharged the battery and the interior light was on!

I think I may have turned it on to help see the wire colours, but it was in the middle position which means it should go off with the doors after a coutesy delay or engine start. If it didn't go out that would have caused battery draining!

I've only recently been able to start the engine after much cylinder head faffery.

But having disconnected the radio, the fuel pump priming when I open door symptom (a feature) has gone.

And the interior light will not go out in middle position.

I now suspect the microswitch in the driver door lock is intermittently working.

Two problems.
