advantages of twin webbers over Bike carbs?

Featured Replies

Or dellortos for that matter... They are a hell of alot more expensive but very tried and tested and seem to be spoken alot higher of?

Anyone got any advice? I'm just weighing up my options,

And bays like these don't help!

any power gain? Not that I'm mega interested in that as I'm running an 8v, but I want a good size trumpet so the 8v would allow more space behind the block for them?

Whats the deal with manifolds also, could I make my own for webbers as I could for bike carbs?

Cheers,

Wombat.

I'd much prefer to run a pair of DCOE's rather than something off a motorbike.

There's much more support out there for them, and they're actually designed to be used in this aplication. Don't get me wrong, there's nothing wrong with bike carbs, but they always seem to be abit of a bodge, And unless you properly sort and tune them, you'll get shit MPG.

Not too mention shite performance!!

i never set mine up 'properly' on a rolling road, got decent performance and great MPG.

my twin weber setup on my mk1 golf cost me upwards for £500 pounds!

My bike carb setup cost me around £200...

Horses for courses!

My tuner normally doesnt want to get involved with bike carbs on a car engine - they are designed for completely different disiplines he said. However, the one exception he makes is for the recent afh and cbr600 conversions he has done. It seems to work very well.

Like anything, it needs setting up properly.

weber=noise= :)

mhmmmmm 8v

I would like to find out for sure why people claim that twin carbs are better than bike carbs. Obviously there is a reason why twin webers etc were used on carbs and bike carbs were used on bikes.

But twin Webers/Dells are a 50s/60s design, and surely if they were better than the multiple carb setups on bikes then manufacturers would never have bothered replacing them on their production bikes?

I'm not a carb guru or anything, but it makes sense. Big boss Bogg claims the multiple bike carbs are better, and he has had decades worth of experience tuning all types of different carbs. People say "Well if bike carbs are so good, how come race cars don't use them?" I would like to know the answer to that myself! But I do know that they are very common practice to be used with grasstrack cars. Surely it must be down to regulations?

Well race cars will be using injection in most cases these days surely?

Like you I know very little about either but I have seen mk2 golf 16v's getting the same kind of power from bike carbs as they are with twin webber style carbs. Although tbh even if webbers make more power you can't get away from the fact that a bike carb setup will give you nice gains over the standard setup. Obviously gains are dependant on other things as well but with the afh for example bike carbs tend to give at around 20bhp, what other mod is gonna give that sort gains for that sort of money?

To me it just seems like there's a lot of snobery about it all

When someone asks "what is best?" , what do they actually mean? Is it Biggest potential peak power?, torque? Cheapest? For me a pair of webbers is a much favourable setup, that's because they can be adapted massively to suite any application, still giving huge gains over the standard system.

Bike carbs don't allow for a different choke size or different velocity stack setups etc, so they can never be bang on, good but not bang on.

The reason why bike carbs give a good gain is the fact that they flow a lot more air than a standard set up, get the fuelling somewhere near and you'll get a power increase. It's the same story with a pair of webbers, but the beauty is that they can be manipulated and setup for different applications by changing things such as choke size , trumpet size etc. If you want a torque biased engine you fit smaller chokes, a high end screamer needing bigger chokes.

bike carbs and twin 40s do not have good fuel economy. i was getting the same fuel economy as a focus st. and that IS with them set up. the 40's on my friends jetta were also fully set up and he had crazy poor fuel economy

oh btw, with my car, this is worked out with normal driving.. not ragging the nuts off it!

Not too mention shite performance!!

Try telling that to my 130bhp afh....

performance is awesome! what you on! lol

Sorry but if you're getting shit economy, they're not set-up properly. I don't care who set them up.

I mean I want to bolt them on primarily for looks. I want very little in my engine bay and an injection system therefore is taking to much space. Scene whore points removed I seem to be getting do webbers over bike carbs if you can justify them...?

why would that mean there not set up correctly. i dont see a way of bike carbs being more efficient than a standard carb.

i want your bank balance if you're considering making a change like that for under the bonnet looks!!

Define efficiency?

On any fueling set-up , your aiming for an ideal AFR of 14.7 parts air to 1 part fuel (petrol), in lambda terms you want to be between 0.88 to 0.91 (lambda being 1.00)

If your close to this throughout the rev range, you'll be making the most possible power, and getting decent economy as there is very little wasted fuel.

If your getting bad economy from a little 1.4 16v engine on a set of 600's , your not running anywhere near ideal AFR.

I don't want to spend £200 throwing a set of bike carb set up on if I then have to spend a fortune in fuel and waste a load of time setting them up when they may not run correctly when I could spend more now and get very tried and tested carbs which will be better in the long run...Hense asking 'What are the advantages'. Oh and for the record I've done EVERYTHING to my car by myself so it's not in my nature to spunk money for no reason.

I have a few contacts which may be able to find me some webber/dellortos slightly cheaper. That aside from the fact it doesn't answer my question...

check the rad ;) x

Its another matter, But I think mines mounted too low... identical though :)

bike carbs always have the ideal choke size , they ar vacuum controled

if the carbs are set up well you always have the right afr
