Classic Car Insurance....

Featured Replies

As title,

With the winter comming up, i am due to change my day to day insurance policy over from my polo to the Caddy van.

I was talking to a fella the other day in the pub, who told me it might be worth my while getting classic car insuance on my MK2 for the summer, as i hardly do any miles in it, and its just for shows and fun...

Does anyone know of any good companys? or good reasons to do it?

Its an early mk2, i do have question though. Such as:

Does it have to be a certian age before its considered a classic? This chap had a mk2 golf and said he had classic car insurance.

And, Can i have like a limited millage poliacy that makes it cheap?

I'm 27, and have 10 years of no claims and no conviction.. and fed up of paying loads to insure a car i do less then 1000 miles in....

Any advice, or recomendations?

Thanks people

Have not had a classic insurance policy my self because i was under 21, how ever I'm 21 and will be going down the same route.

I enquired about this and Lancaster seem to be top notch, my mate just insured his MK2 polo breaddy for £700 with an 8000 mile policy, that may seem a bit high to you but hes 21 and was getting qoutes over 2K.

Footman James is a name that seems to be mentioned over and over again on retro rides when a discussion about classic policy's comes up so might be worth having a look on their site. There does seems to be more requirements for getting a classic policy but from what I've seen they seem to work out a whole lot cheaper. It's some thing i'm gonna be looking into if I get a second car

Limited mileage policy may be a good bet, feel free to give us a try..

classic car insurers do get arsey about mods though

I'm insured on my mk1 golf with adrian flux on a classic policy. They were fine with all the mods (13x7's, coilovers, gti brakes etc). When i rang to enquire about the cost to my policy on fitting a rollcage, i was told there was no extra cost.

240 quid a year, third party fire and theft.

Only snag is the policy doesn't earn no-claims bonus.

I'm paying around that now though, for a fully com policy on my breadvan. My not much used breadvan.

Ow well, I'm gonna just do some ringing and i think limitted millage is the way forward.

It depends on the policy - you can get classic policies for modified cars with a wide variety of insurers. My old man pays about £160 a year with a hefty agreed value on his Jensen FF, and that's just under 500bhp compared to the 330bhp it had when it left the factory 42 years ago...

As has already been mentioned, the only downsides with classic policies are that they generally don't accumulate NCB; and most are fairly limited mileage - but it all depends on the policy!

iv got a classic insurance with HIC limited mileage and most mods wount put my payments up.iv got another insurance for my daily drive and they shadowed my ncd so iv got ten years on both

with footman james your polo has to be over 30 years old to be considerd ''classic'', varies from car to car :/
