haha i put them on from day one...bolts are tight obviously, use locktite every time so no risk of slippage, but could just do with being a bit harder. iv adjusted a few times and no issues, i was just saying if he was to make more, use something harder - advertising something and selling to multiple people with no testing himself etc with peoples fresh built engines that have cost time and money would cause an issue. naturally hes doing people a favour offering these cheaper than buying one and such but should still be good enough for the task etc. it works fine and I'm happy to leave it on, however i dont think id buy another. but hey just my 2p.

You haven't put any washers on the bolts? :? , What did you expect? The aluminium is grade 5052 HX9, marine specified so far harder than it needs to be...

And no testing? I've had one on each of my GT's for 6,500 miles each and the bolts haven't left a mark on about 8 variations of timing set-ups.

I can't help it if you don't use and set them correctly...

I can't see how could leave an imprint on the aliminium, it would just deform the washer,

What torque you doing them up to?

Edited by MaxMax

Well my slots close up everytime I do them up.

And 10 or 12nm I think, with a calibrated torque wrench. Using washers on the bolts and always have.

I do bolts up to 200+ NM onto aluminium at work and that doesn't deform it or anything, yet 10nm with a washer deforms my slots so everytime i adjust I have to remove each individual bolt and clear the slots to allow it to adjust instead of just stick where it was last done up.

And I deal daily with things that fit on cad, or are sufficiently specified, or hard enough or well capable of the task in hand, however reality is a variance that a lot of people (commonly people fresh from uni with no hands on experience) can't seem to grasp.

It maybe whatever grade aluminium, simple fact is, it crushes under a little torque, if you make more I'd look at making it harder or something.

It's not fell off and I can adjust my timing.

Was only saying.

Pics would help, get some up.

What are the parts you tighten to 200Nm? To be honest i don't beleive you, also stating that you tighten things upto 200nm is irrelavent, as i highly doubt they will be M6 bolts with standard size washers...

You have to remember that your putting a lot of pressure on a small surface area, so you need to be using a bigger washer, and rely on the friction between the orignal pulley and the alloy plate, not the bolt force.

The material was chosen because of its hardness figure, i'd have to move to steel to get it any tougher.

200nm? Some are tighter, but thats m14 bolts, however ratio of bolt head to washer size is a similar ratio to that of the m6 ones.

Suspension components on landrovers are tight, it's a struggle to achieve torque on some things even using 1.5m torque wrenches. Naturally they're still low torque in comparison to trucks etc, but it's still clamping onto aluminium.

Forget I said anything, it doesn't matter. It's not fell off, it's just a bit of a pain.

try working on trains. then you know what torque is :p

Yeah I know mate, but was just an example that our prototype aluminium parts with machined finishes don't crush and squash the slot/holes up when tightened

Do you stikk have any of these left mate?

I think i have one left dude, i'll look tomorrow!

Don't suppose you could make me up a set if i sent you some pulleys could you?

  • Author

I probably could yeah, i think I'm out of material though i think. I'll check it all tomorrow and update the thread.

Cheers!

I can supply material for you to do it if you need.

You turn the centres or mill them? Just tell me what size and i can supply

Cheers

Hi Max, just out of interest, say your vernier pulley fails whilst I'm running in my new engine due to a manufacturing fault, where you have drilled and tapped into where there isn't much spare material in the centre of the OE pulley, and my lovely pistons get a mashing from some valves. Where do we stand regarding liability for the damage?

Not trying to undermine your workmanship, just wondered what your plan was if you got an email with a situation such as the above? I have looked at doing this in the past an decided it were safer to pay the money and buy a Kent Cams pulley made from billet.

Perhaps some pics of the modified pulley would be good.

Where can I get a Kent vernier pulley dude?

Cheers

Any pulleys for AFH???

You would have to send me your original pulleys mate, and i'll make them to fit them.

PM me for more info.

yo max

i brought this pulley off you in december and have only just got it fitted.

iv put it in with a gt cam ( i hope it was a gt cam lol ).

took the car up the power engineering for the rolling road and tune up..the guys were very impressed with the quality or workmanship on the pulley

because i have a 1.3 spi engine they said that I'm limited on power and tuning would be hard and have recommended that it needs a remap or change to gt management.

is that possible?

many thanks for all your help so far - if your going to the polo show il see you there!

Its defiantly possible to swap to the GT MPI, but you'd need the GT ECU, fuel rail, injectors, TB and possibly some of the loom? Be better to get a decent bike carb set-up with 4-2-1 stainless exhaust manifold.

Thanks, Martyn :)
