Anyone got an old set of front discs lying around in the manchester area I just need to try them to see if this is the problem with my car. Don't want to buy a new set incase it isn't that. minizippy , the discs are cheap as chips, i suspect it would cost you around £20 for a pair - whats the fault with the car??

Cheers for the offer of those for free. Much apprieciated. Bit too far though. My problem is a humming sound. Just done the wheel bearing. Noise still there. I'm trying to solve the problem because my mum might want to buy it off me. It's agreat car and i would love it to stay in the family. I've had it for sale on here but i think that problem is putting people off. Only thing i can think of now is adodgy disc. Will buy new ones if trying some old ones solves the problem. Thanks guys.

It's unlikely to be a disc if it's "humming" ... You're SURE you've diagnosed where it's coming from? Wheel bearing noise has a nasty habit of sounding like it's coming from the opposite corner of the car from the dodgy bearing. I'd go round it again and check every bearing with the car jacked up. Fronts tend to last a long time on these cars, whereas rears can die relatively quickly, especially if you tend to load the car up.

Well i removed the discs and calipers. put the car on axle stands and drove it. The sound went away. Put everything back and the sound came back. a bit confusing really. I'm reluctant to go splashing loads of money on it to fix the problem. I'm trying to sell it. I have a newer vw now and want to spend my money on that. I'm no expert mechanic so maybe i've diagnosed the problem wrong. Anymore help would be great thanks. Really want to try some other discs. At least i can rule that problem out then.

By "everything" are you including wheels? or just discs/calipers?

If it's just the brakes, it's properly weird... if it's with the wheels back on, it could be the additional resistance/revolving mass highlighting an issue with wheel bearing, CV joints or even gearbox bearings. By doing the same test again, and this time stopping one of the wheels, you should be able to find for definite which side the issue is, and perhaps listening through a stick to the gearbox (near the bearing) and then hub (whilst it's running) may help you home in on the problem.

I see where you're coming from trying to change the discs. I'm not saying it's a bad idea either, just flagging some ideas up to you.

yeah i see where your coming from. Everything was removed wheels as well. One wheel bearing brand new. The other one no play whatsoever. Tried spinning it. Can't hear a thing. I was thinking maybe the extra weight of the wheel would add extra weight onto it and cause a problem. I'd replace everything if i was keeping the car until i found the problem. But i'm reluctant to go throwing money at it if i'm only going to get a few hundred pounds for it anyway.

it could be the tread pattin on your tyres or the road surfurse you are driveing on ?

concreate is realy noisy

could be dry cv joint from broken cv boot

the brake pads wareing down and the warnout discs having rust lips on the edge that catch on the pads (talking from expreance) wanted to get maxium ware :-D

Thanks mr g40. Pads are brand new. Could possibly be a tyre i suppose.
