Name some small + fast FWD cars!

Featured Replies

A friend and I have a mildly stupid, yet utterly ridiculous idea (don't want to give too much away right now ;) ) for a project, and we need a quick (looking for 100bhp+) fwd car, preferably with a seperate subframe (6n and later polo styleee) to make it happen!

i know there's the polo 16v + gti, golf gti, vr6 (tempted) r32 all that sorta thing, but i'm only really clued up on vdubs so thought you guys might be able to help with some non-VAG suggestions :D

needs to be something of a reasonable age that we can pick up for a reasonable sum too (ie, less than £500) but it doesn't need to be road worthy, we're only going to want the front end of it ;)

thanks in advance :D

and i'll be sure to keep you all posted when we get cracking, i think you'll like it

Ibiza GTI?

mk1 polo 895cc

oh and R32's are not FWD

mk1 clio 16v and williams

saxo vtr and vts

Fabia vrs

then the ek and eg civic's LSI, SIR, VTI, Type-R

And if I were you I wouldnt bother with any of the mk1 clios or the saxo's not at all reliable! Youve also got the R5 mentioned above, wouldnt bother matey, had a mk1 clio with an r5 lump and they just constantly have head issues!!

4motion are they not? either way, 99% sure they will mate to the g/box from the vr6, thus enabling use of the subframe.

although tbh, i think an r32 may well prove lethal in the car it's going in ;)

glanzas would be too pricey, and finding one isn't the easiest of options, nippy little things though, got a mate with one running 280 brake, it's insane

hadn't considered a saxo, will look into that!

a proper mini.

Ph1 RenaultSport Clio 172

r5gtt!

Uno turbo, punto turbo, polo g40, Peugeot 205 GTI.

Or you could man up and buy my S3 powered Polo 20vt

Most these mentioned are hard to come by sub £500 ? maybe punto/ saxo and clio thats it though?

that's what i was thinking

and panda, man up? you haven't seen what car the engine's going in yet :ninja: it'll be more than scary enough with a "mere" 100bhp :smoke:

Punto GTs will be hard to find sub £1000, as will G40s. as well as any turbo hot hatch

VTS will probably be your best bet

loads of older punto gt's for sub £1k, loads! looks to be a good option to, seperate subframe up front which is what we're after :D

Presume its going in some form of gokart....

 you could say that

Mybrother had an old mitsi colt 1.6 16v, was rapid and cheap as chips! Or maybe an old rover of some sorts.

seat leon r32s can be front wheel drive if u pull the fuse out they arnt permenant 4WD

well it's a car, with 4 wheels and a steering wheel

the size of the car doesn't matter, nor does the size of the engine going in, we have ways of making things fit :p

i'm going to leave it at that, if i told you any more, i'd have to kill you :paranoid:

if it all goes ahead (will be getting started in the next few weeks if we do decide to give it a go) then i'll stick a build thread up on here, or at least a link to the build thread (not a vw, not sure it'd be welcome :( ) but until then, it's all super secret, i don't want anyone to laugh at the idea and put us off

thought about just buying an engine and subfame? rather than a car.

if we get the whole car, it'll be a salvage jobby, got a mate who runs a breakers and fixes up write offs so he can pick up a donor dirt cheap from auction for us. He offered me a mk3 golf vr6 for £200 last week with nothing more than a big old dent on the rear quarter

it'll probably be about the same price as just an engine + subframe with the added bonus of having the wiring loom, brakes, suspension, wheels etc etc to play around with and a few bits left over to sell on to get some money back

I know where theres a punto turbo going for about £400

need to sort out somewhere to store/work on it first, should be moving house in a few weeks but it's not 100% yet, but if we do, 6 CAR DRIVE!!!!!!!!! well excited

still need to do some more research too, few trips to the scrappy with a tape measure and a bit of head scratching, then we can think about getting a donor

i know of a 306 gti6 lump going for 150?

Corsa gsi, corsa redtop, astra redtop, citroen c2, 206 gti

Why do they have to be small cars? If you considered a VR6 then why not one of the many cheap V6 saloons such as Mondeo/Vectra/Laguna? Or Saab 2.3T?

Depends how you want it to behave, though. Sounds like you'd be better with a bike engine - if you're gonna build something silly, you'll need the skills to stay alive, and so you'll be quite capable of modifying an existing subframe for such a unit.

I don't know why you'd pull a 1.6 16v assembly from a Saxo VTR when a 2.0 16v assembly from a Xsara would cost about the same. But again, depends what kind of nature you want from it - a grunty engine won't be ideal, you probably want something more progressive.

If so, steer clear of diesels.

Sorry? Seat Leon R32 you say?
