Right so I'm currently wanting to buy an mtb and there's an ad on eBay for one but the seller wants payment by paypal only also pick up which isn't a problem for me. Now it does seem strange that he wants paypal I've even messaged him and asked why not cash on collection to which he said paypal is the safest method of payment on eBay, which I guess is true. So what do you lot think? The seller himself seems genuine, 100% feedback over 300 feedback and he has around 20 other items for sale, would there be a reason for him to say paypal only?

He may owe money to paypal for a refund or something. suggest a bank transfer? either that or hes just an anal idiot.

Couple of times in the past where I have said cash on collection is fine people have bought the item then messaged me to say they are going to pay cash. Then the message me saying they dont want it anymore, give some rubbish excuse about their cousin eating a bad curry or something and not pay for it.

That then means that, although you the seller gets back the final value fee you still have to relist it and get charged more insertion fees.

Demanding to be paid through paypal avoids this.

I however would be happy enough to accept a paypal deposit and take the rest in cash.

Yea I will ask him that cheers. Even if I did pay him through paypal, he gives me his address and I go and he doesn't 'exist' then I will be able to claim my money back wouldn't I?

Offer him a 10% deposit of what the item sells for .

if he refuses say youll pay via paypal on his computer when you collect it.

I dont see what the problem here is to be honest... paypal is safer for you too. Whos to say that he wont be waiting for you to arrive with your cash and he has some big mates with him ready to kick you in and steal your money?

At least with paypal you can claim your money back if it all goes tits up.

Just that I kind of thought it was weird as cash on collection would make more sense tbh. Guess I'm being too overly cautious too.

thats one of the problems with the vast amount of scammers out there... it makes it harder for genuine people to buy and sell things. :(

He maybe worried about dodgy notes. One of my mates sold a load of fishing tackle through eBay and the bloke came and paid in cash, it wasn't until he went to the shop after that he found all the notes were fake and he nearly got arrested for trying to use them.

I'd say if his feed back is good and he's a long time ebayer then I'd be happy to pay with paypal as long as he is the one covering the costs

I am guessing the seller doesn't realise if he pays via PayPal and then collects, the seller cant prove that the buyer has the item, and the buyer can claim the money back from PayPal saying he hasn't received goods :)

That is the reason, if I collect - I pay cash. If they post - I pay PayPal :)

he may want paypal only as you can't pay eBay fees in real money, they come out of your PP account...

My neighbour asks for PP only (whether collecting or posting) for that exact reason
