Honda 1.6 VTEC engine

Featured Replies

I'm considering looking for an old Honda Civic with the 1.6 VTEC engine (around 160bhp I believe). Sound like nice engines, b16a being the technical name? What are peoples first hand experiences with them? Wondering if it'd be appropriate as the next step up in performance from my 8valve mk2 Golf GTI.

Fuck off

they haven't...

Awesome engines imo, and if you want you could drop a B18C5 or K20A in there for shits and giggles.

They haven't what? Not had a reported engine failure?

If that's what your trying to sugest then prove it

i think they mean the v-tec system. its been super reliable

the VTEC sysem has never had a reported engine failiure, it was on 5th Gear some time ago I think...

So your trying to tell me that a v-tec'ed motor has never gone bang? Head gasket blown or bearings given up ect?

well yes obviously, i do banger racing seen em go pop many times, i think it was the ones inside warranty etc. The F20C motor afaik has never had a reported problem. ever.

*sigh* Sorry mum

:wasted:

Jap cars, Hondas, and V-tec can all suck my nutsack.

if you chat shit, dont be surprised when you get shot down.

and to take anything you hear on 5th gear of all places as gospel is just foolish. my nans got better car advise than those clowns!

I wasn't chatting shit I was just saying...

My friends head gasket went the other day... and its never run right since he got it.. turbo over vtec i say ;)

G40.

that cracked piston isnt due to vtec though nessecarily

He never mentioned v-tec, he said the f20c motor had never had a reported failure

An engine is only as strong/reliable as its weakest component, not the strongest. It's all well and good banging on about how good the v-tec system is in terms of reliability but all that is is a variable valve timing setup, its hardly the most important part of the engine and its also pretty difficult to see how that would be able to cause an engine to fail in a way that Honda couldn't riggle out of by blaming some thing else or the owner.

Just out of interest I wonder how many 6n2 gti engines have failed solely due to the vvt system on them?

Yeah i've heard that rumour too, about the VTEC system on an unmodified engine never failing. Testament to the design if it's true! I've certainly never heard of one failing, plenty of them go boom though

oh right yeahh fair enough. i was on about the vtec side of things, its a very reliable system. also very fun to drive I'm guessing! even the engines though, you dont hear of THAT many failing, must be pretty well made. obviously there will be mechanical failures on some, thats inevitable. but yeah on the whole id say there pretty good? :)
