Ok, so my old relay broke a while back so I fitted another one my dad had lying around, and since then my indicators have flashed too fast.

My Mk2 didn't come with side repeaters as standard (which the police tried to tell me otherwise yesterday, fcking jokers - told me I had filler in my wing!!).

Could it be that the relays are different? So this new one is expecting the side repeaters as well?

All of the indicators work, just too fast. I'll check for connections in a bit but I got a hunch it's the new flasher unit.

If theres no blown bulb then it could be.

always thought side repeaters are only supposed to be a requirement if your front/rear indicators don't wrap around.

Only on post 87 cars.

My bet is bulb out, or LED bulbs fitted?

Yes if the new flash unit is a 6 plus 2 unit then it is looking for the side repeaters and will flash to fast , you need a 4 plus 2 flasher . This means upto 4 lights on the car plus upto 2 on a trailer.

aha brilliant, I will look at the relay then to see if it's for 6+2 bulbs.. it gets dark well quick now ffs!

all bulbs are working and LED bulbs are not fitted.

the relay works on resistance!- the more it has the longer the delay and it is rated with a number for that reason, so when you have a bulb out it has less resistance and flashes faster!

if you connect another bulb to the circuit it will make it flash slower!

So you need the proper relay.

I found this out installing my TT dash as the indicator relay is in my hazard switch- cannot be changed so to cure the fast flash i have 2 extra bulbs in indicator housings hidden in my boot

on my 6n2, even if a side repeater bulb was out, it wouldn't flash fast, only when an 'important' indicator was out...

side repeaters are 5w and are neglible to a 50w main bulb

What he needs is an old style flasher unit , eg 21w + 21w + 21w not the new style , then the flash rate will be right , use a 21w + 21W + 5w + 21w then the flash rate will be wrong . Repeater bulbs are 5 w and the main are 21w. The new units after about 1989 worked no matter what bulbs you had.

I think what I am trying to say is get the wright flash unit and all will be ok !!!!

You could fit an electronic flasher relay, they have the correct flash rate up to maximum load. The downside is that they don't give you any clues by flashing faster if a bulb fails.

where do i find the correct relay? i've checked ebay and they all look the same... :/

There are others and you can get them from most auto parts suppliers Typical Electronic Flasher

halfords do them and surprisingly they arent too over priced with them as i have two of these in my car as i had to fully re wire my indicator loom.

put a resistor in series this should slow it all down, what size resistor tho I'm not sure. that is something that you will have to play around with.

This is certainly something to try but not recommended if you don't know exactly what you're doing. Any resistor would need to be very small value in ohms but high value for power dissipation. If you get things wrong resistor get very hot, hot enough to cause fires!!

as above- quite dangerous and will more then likely result in a fire if the resistor value is wrong.

As above, in any case, you would need a 29 Ohm resistor, which is a non-standard size.

Correct flashing speed is between 30 and 60 flashes per minute.
