Bought my 5 door gx 1.5 8v in april to restore etc and have been using it as a weekend/mess about car really and not done much to it, its pretty solid where it matters and runs like a dream, the only problem was abit of rust on the body so today i got my finger out and started my little resto project! sorry about crap quality pics, digital cam is bust so iphone will have to do

did have gold rims but they were flaky so quick paint in satin black was done

got it on the operating table and cut it open

this is the worst area we found along the sill, apart from the bent floor (from improper jacking) which was easily whacked out

new sill cut/shaped and postioned, was suprised at how well the pattern fit to be honest

welded on ground back and filler added

thats all i had time for today but tomorrow i will hopefully get the rear arch and back corners somewhere near finished!

Never seen a five door mk1 before, I want one now.

wasnt my first choice to be honest, but when i went to look at it i thought it would be more of a challenge to make look good than a 3 door!

haven't seen many 5 door mk1's will be keeping my eye on this

Forgot too add that I painted a few engine bay bits, well all the brackets covers etc last week to tidy it up abit,

more importantly more progress today!!!

Rubbed down and stonechipped the sill, bit more filler on the arch but couldn't be bothered taking a pic of that as I was hungry so tomorrow I should be rubbing like a mad man and get some primer on to seal it all up!

i had one of these few years back. bought it for £70, with mot. stripped all the good chrome bits off (filler cap alone sold for £50 ) then sold it a week later for £70. he just drove it back to yorkshire half stripped with no tax

Its all about confidence mate, and with this it was do it or waste a good chasis tbh, plus my old man gave me lots and lots of advice and knowledge he gained in his hay day restoring minis (his era used to make all there own panels etc which is pretty daunting to be honest i was worried about tapping the repair panel into place lol) glad you are insipred tho! go pick up that cutting disc

was its lhasa green a reg?? lol this seemed to be all in tact and order, was actually for sale on here abit back before i bought it i had been to lok at 3 cabby gtis 2 caddys and 7 3doors of various guise and as soon as i layed on my back and looked underneath this i knew id end up buying it lol, everywhere that should be rotten wasnt lol, which i have just found out why!!! bloody ziebhart everywhere was dripping all over the shop!

yup exactly same colour. 1.5 gx. was some guy and his son. probs about 7 years ago. was solid car. i just took all the chrome goodies off

no wont have been this one only came into yorkshire about 18 months ago

another skim of filler a rub back and then some high build on, looks good if i do say so myself, lol

Certainly does look good! When I've got somewhere dry and indoors to work on my mk1 I'll be following your footsteps and ridding mine of rust!

ok well thing are hopefully gonna kick off with this soon! I've stuck with the same plan in my head all winter now and so far I've got a mini stock pile of parts for it and the job list is growing lol

jobs:

bit more rust busting on door bottoms etc

straighten the roof dint and sill/floor (simple hammer and dolly stuff wont even need filler)

buy and fit new headliner

full respray

roll arches

fit new front panel, wings & bonnet

fit new lights all round

new rear window winder mech

chrome handles and possibly chrome flags

new chrome window trim

paint chrome body trim satin black

paint chrome grill trim lhasa green

new windscreen (28 year old screen is chipped to hell)

install sounds;

4x6 jbl speakers front and rear

10" sub build into side appetures with amp on other side

then after that it will be simple bolt on shiney bits!!! pretty excited tbh!!!

Cheers man! Yeah I do it, love getting my mitts dirty shouldn't be too long before I have real progress then well have to all have a meet again!

Got bored had a few mins spare, an expensive touch up can (nozzle is amazing!!!) and the state of these always vexed me, so....

Have the two strips in primer but think I might need to put some high build on and flat them as they had loads a dents!

Few deliveries I've had over last few days!

Also bought a chrome water pipe on eBay at the bargain price of £17!!

A "perfect condition" bonnet for £22 and still have a load of new parts at my unit!

Starting to get excited now!!!

ok not updated this in an age but thought i better had, a few months ago i had a week off work so i cracked on with the body work, rebuilt 2 of the bbs rms, built up a spare bbs rm, bought a load of fresh bits and bobs. heres some pics of the progress

general prep etc

what was a mint arch decided it was going to rot away whilst in storage over winter under the gti arches so that got welded up etc

as did the back corner

in primer

then got it into paint

panels started to go back on

then it was time to start rebuilding it

having a bake in the mini heat wave we had in may/june

windows back in ready for a flat and buff

starting to look like a car again

got it ready for its MOT

Flew through its mot, then i took it to a show that weekend

the full story can be found on my edition build but thats pretty much the build for now, more progress in the next few weeks!

ok so postman delivered another load of goodies the other day! few detailing bits and a couple of head units, (one is for my mate bought 2 to get them abit cheaper)

had a bit of time before i got back to work so decided id fitthe new headunit gone from this which doesnt suit any part of the cockpit and stick out like a sore thumb

to this

which isnt particularly steathly but i dont think it stick out as much as the other one.

Today i fitted my new seal and chrome trim today! Think it finishes of the exterior nicely!
