Quick question boys, is a chassis notch an Mot failure? If not, do you have send back the logbook to indicate a change in the car body etc ?

I'm not that low atm, but I wanna go lower! Not really sure but I'd estimate 70-90. my drive shaft hits now and then and on fast corners.

Werent sure man, couple people have told me its an MOT failure but I was thinking so many people have it done so I was skeptical about it.

yeah mine was hitting about about 90-100mm down, you defo do to get low on a 6n and 6n2...

they should pass an MOT done PROPERLY! people weld new engine mounts in and such, similar thing hey?

^^^ARB isnt the issue here. so drop links will not help.

A chassis knotch shouldn't fail an mot as long as its well done, problem is you are modifying the chassis which can be a very murky area and the car may need additional testing in the form of an isv test or some thing.

I don't know all the in's and out's tho so maybe give it a quick Google as I'm sure this would of been asked and answered in depth on the net in the past

As cymro said the arbs not the issue, the driveshafts hitting the chassis is the issue

90mm on 14s isnt really low tbh, what size tyres are you running? and you should be able to go nearly (an actual not "iv wound my 120mm coilies all the way down") 120mm with a chassis notch

maybe theyd have to crash test your car with the notch in place?

its not unheard of them recreating an accident with a similar car and circumstances..

Personally I don't like the thought of modifying the chassis in that way. It shouldn't fail the MOT if plated up and welded well but then that might only be because its not actively tested/looked at.

However if any modification you do causes or contributes to an accident then you could be faced with answering some questions!

For example does anyone know how notching the chassis effects the crash protection of the occupants of the car in a head on collision? What happens if its found that the passenger would have survived if the chassis notching wasn't carried out. Its something to think about...

afaik it's not illegal technically, although it states modification of the monocoque chassis (iirc within 6 inches of a mount) requires an SVA

lots of thinks that are illegal pass an mot, an mot is not an indication of legality.

depends if they notice certain things.

it's at the discretion of the tester really. If they feel it's been modified to the point of not being structurally sound any more then they can fail it. To be honest, if it's been done well then I doubt they'd even give it a second glance.

Lol its a grey area to be honest; just depends how badly you wanna do it and how low your gonna go. Don't think I can handle cracking sumps .. allow it!

haven't read all the replies but just had mine notched and it was MOT'd a day later. All the MOT tester done was get his little punch hammer out and tap the weld and plate. Scraped away some of the sealant stuff the welder had put over the weld, inspected the weld and that was that.

I asked him if it was illegal and he said quite simply no!

i dont think it should be legal if it,is as welding up a chassis is serious and when you see some work carried out by the kind of people that tend to this kind iof thing can less than substandered to say the least its not diy job at all the chassis is made the way it is for a reason
