NZ Engine tuning..?

Featured Replies

Hi all, was wondering what Ignition upgrades are there for the NZ 1.3 injected engine..? for example, like Performance HT leads and so on..?

Maybe a different dizzy..?

What about other tuning bits.. like GT polo pistons... yes i know its only a 1.3 but insurance is a killer for me atm  but everyone to thier own right

TBH, A good service will be better than any "performance" HT leads. After all unless you change the whole ignition system there is still only 1 spark.

Dizzy is NZ specific.

drop a gt camshaft in there mate, that will add a few horsies and its a straight swap

Ohh alright.. But can i ask what the difference would be of the GT cam compared to the Standard NZ cam..? :?

higher lift cam.

as above. They are very similar engines anyway. The cam is probably the best bolt-on power mod for an nz lump

Ohh ok, so would just let in more air, comapared to the standard cam..

Something that i might look out for then :D

Are there any other MODS which are availible to do to the 1.3 engines..?

I don't think there is so much for the NZ engine, but as said about a gt cam, a good service. I have seen some performance manifold/downpipe and sport exhaust, air filter. I think if you need to get more power then just drop down a 1.4 16v engine would be cheaper..

It's not just more air in, but fuel too. Iirc the duration is longer too.

You should still inform your insurance company, which may make it expensive

Yeah I've got an cone air filter, also thinking about making my own 4 branch exhaust - as I've already got a custom straight through exhaust already minus the front manifold :unibrow:

I've already got the NZ lump so aint gonna really change over, and as i might have said in another thread "Engine conversion" I'm only keeping it still a 1.3 as I'm only 20 as insurance is high for my area in london

Well apparently i heard that if i declare the NZ lump id get cheaper road tax and probably slighlty lower insurance, compared to the standard carbed 1.3 lump already in my Mk2

Just gotta wait and see really after i collect up all the bits i need and Place it all in

well have you thought about making the car weigh less? obviously that wont increase the power but will increase the power to weight ratio.

Cant see how you work out you get lower tax as the engine and car was made before all the tax banding by engine type/size. so it will still cost you £130 for 12 months.

and same with insurance, it would still be classed as an engine conversion, you are aware that they are the exact same engine but the NZ has EFI instead of a carburettor.

You wont even need to remove the whole engine just swap the bits needed to make the fuel injection and ignition run. You can even fit a GT cam into the engine you've got.

Most bolt-on GT mods will go straight onto your NZ.

Golf GTi AFM (once setup, although people have differing opinions on them)

4 branch or even a G40 manifold and downpipe

Poloace NZ chip

should see a free-er revving engine!

Yeah heard of the GTi AFM which basically has a larger bore than the smaller standard AFM and I'm thinking of making my own 4 branch, as I've already got a custom straight through exhaust system

Might look into the "poloace NZ chip"

Do you know what its for though..? and how its used :?

its a tuning chip, you open up the ECU, remove the chip that looks the same and shove the poloace one in.

Clears up flat spots, improves economy and performance.

Ohh ok, but would the engine still have to be set up or is it basically plug and play?

Plug and play, all the mods listed by me above will be plug and play (the Golf AFM will need to be setup though)

  • 4 months later...

just wondering what actually is the difference betwee. a gt and a nz engine then

NZ is practically a AAV engine with multi-point injection and a slightly different distributor both are about the 55bhp mark.

GT has multi-point fuelling, higher compression pistons, longer duration/higher lift cam and some of the heads on GT's have double valve springs to stop valve bounce at high revs (but all 1.3 heads are cast the same).

so.what would i need to change on a nz to make it a gt

Pistons, Possibly dizzy, cam, maybe the injectors

I forgot the gearbox as well. GT has short ratio box.

well I'm gonna go for

286 cam

full powerflow with 4 branch

gt gearbox

gt dizzy

g40 inlet

golf afm with cone filter

njk leads

what bhp would you reckon id be looking at with that lot ?

also woulod a gt fuel pump give me any gains or are they the same and would i be able to plug a gt ecu striaght into the nz lump so i could run a 8k chip sorry for all the questions just new to the engine tuning part of polo's
