Wiring in a afh or avy 16v engine into i mk1 - 3

Featured Replies

Hi i am planning on putting one of these engines into my mk1. I am fine with how to fit it and everything mechanical, just the wiring. The reason i am not sure about the wiring is i plan to run the standard management, and i can't find any faq's or much info on how to do this. One thing i do know is i have to get the immobiliser chip removed in order to run either of these engines, is this correct? Any help much appricated :) cheers

You dont remove the immobiliser chip, however you will need to have the correct ignition key from your mk4 taped to the transponder ring from the immobiliser under the dash somewhere. That is if you plan to just piggy-back the whole mk4 loom into your mk1 loom, i think thats how its done. Look at Mclovin's build threads as he's the man for this exact conversion

If you go with the GTi engine in factory spec you'll have problems. The catalyst and ARB wanna occupy the same space.

I don't know the difference with bonnet clearance on the MK1 but with the MK2 i've not been able to move the engine accordingly because of the vvt actuator catching on the bonnet bracing.

And this despite bending the oil cooler and exhaust manifold back, pulling the ARB right down and forward with custom mounts, and using a lower profile crankcase breather.

So i'm now just gonna hang the engine how i want it, and do away with the front ARB (and use a reverse mounted one). This means revising the front suspension design, which i don't have time for atm - so it's not complete yet and i can't assist further yet.

Cheers for all the great info guys :) i was aware of the problems with the gti, i wasn't aware of those ones tho. Would running a de-cat pipe not help? Or is it a custom sub frame job? As for the electric's on the gti i presume its the same as on the 1.4, just tape it up and put under the dash? Cheers for all the help :)

Dunno about electrics, i'm using a foreign fuel/ignition system. But the GTi is fly-by-wire so you'll have some interesting challenges there (trigger accelerator pedal etc).

You can get about the catalyst issue with some Golf 1.6 16v manifolds, may even be that some GTi's had a differently placed one, but mine is a ceramic one built into the manifold (AFH one has different ports and may leak, i haven't tried it).

If you want to de-cat, just chop it off and weld a single tube on, that'd sort the problem too. But i wanna run the cat and wishbones anyway (interesting name for a pub).
