So, who declares what...

Featured Replies

Jus lt about to lower my 6n2 and made me wonder how many people actually declare their modifications and if so, what have they declared.

Anyone do this?

how many people actually declare their modifications

Not enough.

lots of people do, yet some people don't. my advice is declare it. I've even declared my green brake calipers.

too true

Too true - if you're asking for advice about what you should do, then declare them.

Insurance companies can be very smart people in my experience and they'll look for anything they can to avoid payouts.

Police can also stop you if they have any suspicions.

They'll give you a producer, write "lowered suspension" on it, and if your policy says otherwise it's void.

No insurance & 6 points for driving without it - worth paying the extra couple of quid for peace of mind.

Declare all mods...and post the topic in the correct section

always had everything declared. Most cases it adds 15 quid for wheels, or exhaust. From experience. Not worth running the risk imo.

Yeah, deffo declare. I didnt last year, but I did on renewal, gave my insurance a call and they were cool with everything, Just said that if I had an accident they would put the car back to standard only, but as I dont plan on having an accident, I'm ok with it.

Everything.

Even things like my strut brace and grill are declared.

stupid questions deserve stupid answers... but not in this case.

if you run with undisclosed mods, why would you post up about it on a public forum, in an insurance section, thats sponsered by an insurer?

also if you do pay to declare your mods, why would you be foolish enough to only half cover your ass.

the golden rule here, is tell your insurer all material facts, no matter how trivial.

yes they may flat out refuse to insure you, or put the prce up by such a degree that its unaffordable so find a specialist insurer to cater for your needs.

saves you finding out your 1k standard insurance is void when the unexpected happens, compared to your 2k modded insurance would have cost.

plus its not cars you wanna worry about hitting, its stupid fucking pedestrians moseying about into the road. add a stupid driver into the equation, and hell i'll start becoming an insurance underwriter, seems like its the easy way to make money!

btw brentacre are very good for mods, usually giving you a bhp limit with unlimited other modifications, however the commission they charge on the policies are extortionate.

sky insurance on here, werent particularly competitive and said they wont price match due to the postcode.

insurance costs are a joke yes, but if you cant afford to pay it, you cant afford to drive. simples

It's worth saying that each risk is different (postcode/vehicle/driver/usage), so what's cheap for one man won't be for another. Ringing around is always key.

For what it's worth, Brentacre haven't been able to give me a remotely sensible quote in 5 years, Flux were less than half their price on both my cars, but Sky were cheaper still.

yep very good point Andy. theres so many dependant factors, that ringing around is key, even ringing the same company day to day can give different prices!

flux have previously been very competitive in past years, but for the last two, they have been over 40 percent more expensive than rivals.

each case is totally diff

I've declared absolutely everything on mine, down to the fact i have leather door cards and different coloured interior lighting....my policy is a like for like policy so didnt want them to have any room to manouver

brentacre pissed all over every other specialst/broker i spoke to at the time haha, weird isnt it?

they quoted me 1300 with unlimited cosmetics and 100hp limit, flux quouted 2300 just cosmetically and could fit a roll cage among other things.

declare everything....brentacre said whatever you declare is covered, so my blue interior bulbs will be replaced blue etc.

if you can afford to buy mods for a car, you can afford to declare them, if not, dont do the mods, cause I'm pretty sick of premiums going up and up because of idiots who dont wanna declare to save themself a bit of money, effectively fucking everyone else up in the long run.

so your saying insuring with brentacre, if you crash and lets say your blue bulb somehow got smashed, theyd replace it with a blue one? do any companies offer a way of declaring mods cheaply, yet if you crash it gets replaced with standard stuff? surely thatd nock the price down i spose?

Declare it....!!

It cost me an extra £100 to declare my coilovers... but least i know they'll be replaced... I said to them I have deepdish wheels.... they said that doesn't add any more on..... doesn't make sense but apparently if your car could have alloys as standard then you don't pay more?

I dunno, insurance is a complex world!!

but least i know they'll be replaced

are you really sure about that? a lot of insurance policies wont actually pay out for the modified bits.

You have to declare things for your insurance to be valid. Might as well not bother taking out insurance if you're not going to declare mods (aimed at the original poster). Insurance companies will try and get out of paying claims if they can find an excuse to and undeclared mods are the perfect excuse for them. Some get away with it but it is a big risk. If the worst does happen you could end up getting sued for rather a lot of money (e.g. imagine what the bill is going to be if you hit a porsche and injure people inside it, or worse!). And at best you'll have a big black mark against you and could end up not being able to even get insurance afterwards without paying silly amounts. Not worth the risk IMO.

For what it's worth, Brentacre haven't been able to give me a remotely sensible quote in 5 years, Flux were less than half their price on both my cars, but Sky were cheaper still.

and yet for me, Brentacre are one of the few companies who will actually give me a quote for a highly modified car in my postcode area. And they are by far the cheapest of the ones who will.

Moral of the story is the only way you'll find out the cheapest is by ringing as many as you can. It's literally different for every person.

how many people actually declare their modifications

Not enough.

I agree.

All my mods are declared, my say is that if you can't afford to tell your insurers then don't mod. Its not worth the penalties envolved.

That's because your postcode has insurance AIDs! :p

Just proves that you should always ring around for insurance like you said.

I reckon this'll become more important over the next couple of years, as the main underwriters try to claw back all the cash they had to pay out in 2010 due to snow related accidents, as well as trying to recover from the insurance comparisons websites underselling each other, driving the premiums down below profitable levels. Not quite sure how much this has affected the modified car insurance market though.
