Hi guys,

Just went out to buy new brake pads and the place that sold them to me said they were the right ones but when i have taken them off they are non-identical pads. Whereas the ones i had on there were identical ones.

Does it matter that the ones i have now are not the same as the ones that came off the car?

Also the ones that i now have are the ones that have one short pad and the other one is much longer in pad size but it still fits in the hole.

I am going to be updating the disc and pads for bigger ones in the near future anyway but the pads i had on there were shot.

Just wondering if there is anything wrong with putting these ones on.

you should have 4 pads in total... but 2 different shapes. 1 shape goes on the outside of the disk and the other on the inside.

I have 4 pads in total. 2 per side. The ones came off were 4 of the same. The ones that i have to go on are 2 different styles.

yeah it is normal that you have different pad for the inside of the disk as to the outside.. all the ones I've ever seen have been like this :)

My ferroddo's are all the same!

There are identical and non-identical, there are also 2 different thickness of pad 15mm and 17mm.

The mk2 and my mk3 both need 15mm G40 sided pads, but the motorfactors keep trying to give me either the 17mm or the identical ones.

17s are for solid discs, 15s for vented. The pistons can get a bit reluctant to go absolutely far enough back at this age, hopeless if the seals are perished.

Incidentally, the long banana type pads go on the outsides, the stubby ones go on the insides.

This is because of the different pressure footprint (from the piston for the inside pads, and bi fork for the outer ones).

That is exactly what i have done. With the actual piston putting pressure on the pad i thought it would be better to put the small one on that side and the longer (banana style one) on the outside.

I did the job while i was in college during a practical lesson. I knew that the brake pads going on were suitable, being of very similar design, fitted the same way on both sides and with it written on the box that i was suitable. I just wanted to make double sure after the lecturer made me sign a waiver that i had fitted them after she had given me advice that i shouldn't.
