Turbo set up/conversion.

Featured Replies

Pretty much as the title says. I'm throwing around the idea of a turbo charged lump. I'm primarily from the Honda scene ( flame suit on) ha but have seen sence an now own a handful of dubs.

I'm not to familiar with Vw engine codes etc could somebody help me out?

I could do with being adviced on :-

Best head and block combo for boost application along with internals, CRs and durability of parts I'd rather a realible motor than a strained high output.

As for the head I want To base my project around a gt inlet Mani and gt distributor so are there other heads bar a gt one that these will fit?

I have a mk1 golf 1272cc spare anything I can salvage off this??

Hope someone can help. Thanks.

Afraid I wont be giving up just yet. The allure if a tdi in an mk2 is just too great!

Any engine can run a turbo, it just depends then what's a "safe" boost is for that engine.

Certain VW engines can handle a bit of boost abuse, were as others a anything above a sharp gust of wind will chew the internals.

If you want to go with the 1272 platform then the G40 (PY) is already setup for boost.

GT (3F) has a high compression ratio but pretty bombproof (think there is a GT turbo on here somewhere), not sure what the "safe" boost pressure is.

CL (AAV) can handle 1 bar (think the person who did it hit 1.2 before having issues).

Suggest you have a look at some of the turbo polo's already built. Think we cover everything from mild to clinically insane

Thanks for your response. Do you have any suggestions outside of the 1272 platform? I eventually Wang to put thd engine in my mk2 typ19 so comparability across the board is important.

A realiable 1 bar was my original goal so nice to hear it's doable. I'm struggling to find helpful info on home brew turbo set ups. Plenty on mismatch engine and bike carb set ups these seem to be the norm :(

Any ideas weather the gt head is suited To boost or is the a better option for a lower cr? A friend of mine had a gt engine minus cam, pistons and rod. I'm thinking thus could be a base just done know what parts to scower for :(

Anyone on here had first had experience with a boosted polo?

If you want sensible answers about boosting the "big block" VW motors, then you're best off asking on the Club GTI Forums.

Boosting the 1272cc lump can and has been done several times over. G40 turbo is a popular one these days, but naturally aspirated motors have been boosted too - they're fairly tough. There's a guy on here with an AAV (55bhp Polo CL lump) fitted with a K03 turbo and G40 engine management, that's 9.5:1 compression ratio and is good for 170-175bhp on 1 bar of boost - obviously it required careful mapping to avoid detonation with the higher CR.

If you want a massive turbo and lots of boost, I'd say aim for a low CR motor. Having said that, I'm running 1.6 bar from a little K03 through my lump, and it's 9.3:1 CR - gives nice off-boost driveability and is still fine on high boost as long as you pay attention to the mapping.

Others have turbo'd small block lumps using R5 turbo carbs and a Mk2 Polo ignition system - a good way of keeping the costs down if you feel the advantages of EFI aren't worth the extra expense.

The Polo small blocks have virtually flat heads, and head castings are all the same on 1272cc engines - compression ratios are dictated by the pistons. G40s have stronger cranks, but naturally aspirated parts are pretty strong - e.g. the 175bhp AAV turbo, or the GT (3F) engine we put 80bhp of nitrous through.

Hi Andy. Thanks for your response. I'm not catcall interested in "big blocks" been there done that krs abfs etc.

I thought with having a mk2 golf and esentially running a boosted polo engine this would be the place to sift for info.

Well I've srarted gathering parts so far have a gt head and manifold with fuel rail so can start making the custom manifold.

I havnt set power goals yet but I'm keen to run a built low compression motor for a fair bug of power and reliability.

I've got a gt block minus pistons and rods. Anyone know if g40 pistons and rods will fit this block or even can the block be bored out to take them? Any advantage in doing so? So fat my gt engine is free so great if I can use it to move on withy project.

Cheers.

The g40 pistons and rods should fit yes. You'll want a g40 crank too ideally.

If you can find a 1w engine, and a few g40 parts, you could go for a 1.4 g40. Add an overbore and new pistons and it's possible to get to 1.5. Something I'm currently toying with as I have both a g40 and 1w laying around.

I've not heard of a 1w, what are these fitted too? What cc standard.

Do you know if gt and g40 engines are the same bore? The gt crank I have has just been polished and reground a shame not to use it. Would you be interested in selling your g40 short block. ;)

its a polo 1.4/5 diesel engine, early polo's were never sold in this country with it.

The crank is used to change the stroke and alter the CC.

There used to be a guy on here, think he was german, running a 1W Turbo diesel, from memory he was a proper OEM whore as well for mk2f polo parts.

The guy was Thomas, and his car is in the gallery (black steilheck (sp?)). They came in seat vans in this country. Thomas has strapped a turbo onto his to make a tdi running nearly 3 bar of boost making 137bhp and around 250ftlb torque

Fraid I'm not wanting to sell. Have just bought some parts to make a solid lifter turbo engine. I also want to make a tdi out of what's left of the two

thought it was green? lol

ceramic coated manifold?

golf clocks too.

I know the one you meant but this one looked so much better.

That car is so much win.

Boot panels, Polo Sub, Votex door speakers, Heated seats......drooooooooooooooooooooool.

Oh, theres another one is there? I shall have to check that out

Thanks for that guys no help at all haha.

Does anyone know of there is a block and crank the same as a g40? I don't wanna over spend on a PY short block if there is an alternative. I've been offered mahle pistons and p.e.c rods with head studs for £1000 just want somthing to put them in!!!

I have a gt block just want some one to tell me for sure weather they will fit. C'mon guys!!

i think the G40 block has extra webbing in it - so its specific. if you are going to go the whole hog with new pistons and rods like that - try and find a 1w block!!!! they have oil squirters built into the block for piston cooling.

german ebay is your best bet for it - unless prankster gives up

Afraid I wont be giving up just yet. The allure if a tdi in an mk2 is just too great!

Thanks for your input. Your build looks great! What power ate you putting down?

I had aims for 240hp on a forged motor but it seems the heads are a restricting factor :/ so I'm not sure if it even worth building a forged engine when a stock g40 block/internals can make 200+ hp.

I looked into a 1w block but it doesn't seem a straight forward bolt on head job, I dong mind getting it bored etc but I kinda wanted it to be off the shelf internally. Is there any way oil squirters can be machined into a g40 block? I know that kinda contradicts my previous statement but it seems the bigger problem is the head build-up above the pistons.

You day you are building a 1.5 what spec internals, Block crank pistons are you using to make the cc? What are your power goals?

You won't get an 'off the shelf' engine, unless it's a stock g40.

However, to use the 1w crank you need to sleeve the bolt threads in the head. Then use the g40 pistons and rods. To get the 1.5 you then bore the engine for oversized pistons. I think i have this right (kiz will probably correct me!)

I think you could use your gt block and crank so long as you didn't run insane boost. 240bhp would, IMO, be too much for a wee polo. I think you'd struggle for reliability too.

Maybe a big block would be better. Fitting it would be a problem however

no problem with the head bolts- you just send a slightly bigger drill down the holes and use 1W head bolts.

Whoops, my mistake. Knew youd correct my lack of knowledge!
