Knock off the smoking, lads!

Featured Replies

Just had a lung chopped out (they break your ribs to get at it!) and I was lucky they caught it early enough to be able to do that - the cancer hadn't spread to the lymph nodes, 'cos if that's happened, there's no point in surgery - you've had it - all they'll do is prolong the agony with radio and chemo therapy.

This means no more in the way of physical exertion - I'll no longer be able to get underneath Kitty (my 1.3 'loon) to do what needs doing so she'll be for sale shortly. PM me and I'll let you have the link when I put her in the For Sale section.

Like everyone else, I thought it would never happen to me, but it really changes your view when it DOES! Knock off the smoking, lads!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Glad to hear it was caught early, do you mind if I ask how old you are and how you found out?

A good friend of mine has just started chemo, very strange seeing her with no hair

Glad you have been lucky enough to catch it early, however very unfortunate the sale of your saloon, if it means to you what mine does to me it must be devistating, But you do get extra life as such.

all the best

Good to hear it was caught early but sorry that you can't do much in the way of anything strenuous. This is one reason I don't smoke, I just don't understand why anyone would do it.

I'm 64 and the way I caught on was strange and ridiculously lucky. I woke up with an unusual ache in my chest when I moved my left shoulder and I thought I'd just slept with my arm underneath me and gave it no more thought. However, it was still there at midday, so I called the GP for advice. I'm as macho as the next man about complaining to the doctor, but there was something completely indefinable which told me to take it seriously for a change. Because it was left side, the GP told my to go to A&E, thinking it might be a heart attack. Within 5 minutes of arriving at A&E, I was on a trolley having an ECG, which was fine. They then gave me an X-Ray and lo and behold, there was a shadow on the lung. Everything started from there, but my body never gave me that warning again - apart from the no-smoking message, my slant on it is 'Listen to your body - it could be telling you something important'.

All i see in my future is alcohol issues (The binge drinking generation), not smoking.

Lucky you found out!

Good job it got caught... that sounds proper nasty! I've never smoked and stories like this drive it home for me.

This. I drink way too much.

ooooh i thought you were quite a bit younger, but still stands, lucky escape!

as for the binge drinking generation....i do not fall into this, i am within this generation but hardly ever drink, can never be arsed with the shitty day after. i do enjoy a good pissup but very rare i have one, but bring on haloween!! party friday night and then hitting the town on the sat i think!

'Listen to your body - it could be telling you something important'.

Very important message!

First of all I'd like to say I'm glad the cancer was caught early and you 'just' needed an operation.

No matter if you abuse your body with lots of cigarettes, drink or drugs or do none of those everyone should listen to signs their body gives them that something is not right.

When I was 17 I went for a month ignoring a pain in my groin.

I thought to myself "I'm a man, nothing really bad happens to me, pain killers will keep me right."

Until one morning I woke up at 5am in complete agony, stumbled through to my parents and asked to get taken to the hospital.

Roughly 8 hours later I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and it had spread...I then had to have an operation and endure 9 months of chemo before being told I was in remission.

So, listen to your body and get things seen to!

Really glad you got to it in time mate, just a shame that its hit you as badly as it has

Cancer is like a shitty lottery, no matter what you do or don't do it still could be you. Certain things do obviously increase the risks (if you believe everything we're told most things from sun beds to carrots) but a lot of the time it just hits randomly.

I lost my dad and grandad to stomach cancer, worst thing is they noticed the signs but were repeatedly fobbed off by the doctor that it wasn't any thing to worry about until it was too late (same fucking doctor both times too). so even if the doctor trys to tell your your imagining it, if you know yourself some things not right then stick to your guns and get a second opinion

they noticed the signs but were repeatedly fobbed off by the doctor

A doctor at my local GP told my grandmother to get my grandfather to inhale steam once. If he had, he would have died from it. Told my dad to do the same to solve a chest infection. Fucking idiot.
