i have manged to get the heat cover off but dont know which bolts to take off next I've searched the internet and no joy so if anyone knows of a diagram or step by step this would seriously help me

Once the heat shield is off the bolts for the manifold should be right in front of you, some across the top of the manifold and there is some underneath (which are slightly harder to get to)

Yeah but I can see the two inbetween the pipes and there are two underneath the heat shield do I have to undo those

The bolts are usualy 13mm from vw, but I've had a few in 12mm form.

If they have never been removed that can be tricky bastards, and easy to snap. Use a but of WD before you have a crack at it.

Socket wrench

1 1/2 inch extention

12mm/13mm socket

Wd40

New gasket

Post #3, If the bolts you are speaking of connected to the same piece of exhaust and not the down pipe the yes remove them, they should all be the same bolt size, its no complicated that seeing the bolts infront of you and undo'in them.

ok i have got everything i need just need to let my engine cool down a bit and ok is this a simple job?

thanks right it was easier than i thought but still the problem persist which is it sounds like its blowing from the gasket but I'm missing a bolt from a stud so one side aint tight but i cant get the stud out far enough to get a bolt on (also its smoking now is that cos of the wd40)

its stopped now i think it was the wd40 and

yeah thats what I'm thinking and no i never snapped anything i need to extract the stud i think to get a nut on then i hope it fixes it tbh

if it never snapped the nut should go on as it came off?

If you take the stud out put a nut on it then fit it its going to bite a couple of threads into the head then the nut will just thread down and possibly pull the threads it has gripped into on the head when you tighten the nut against the manifold.

the thing is i cant get even a bolt onto the end of it to do that mate tbh need a stud extractor so i cant get it out a bit if you know what i mean

just had a look by taking off everything(again) and tried using the other bolt to get the stud out but guess what (very obv) the stud is snapped which i didnt do cos i never touched that side so will need to get a new stud etc which i need to get tomorrow when my local parts centre opens
