Scrimmy's Mk3 Coupe

Featured Replies

The story goes something like this... I bought this a couple of months ago as I've currently got a Mk4 Golf V5 and instead of going really silly with it I decided I need a project for the garage. Plus I got fed up of going to VW shows this year and walking round seeing the same cars all the time. Next year is all about 1/4 miles, track days and hill climbs.

Anyway here we go, its a K plate 1.3 spi...

This is about the worst of the rust so nothing to much to worry about

The engine bay is clean enough but that engine won't be staying

A coupe of weeks later when i should have been concentrating on brakes, susp and engine but these wheels came up on eBay and I thought I couldn't turn them down.

They are 14x5.5, 4x100, offset 45 on the blue ones and et48 on the red ones. Cost me £125 plus £50 in petrol to collect them so I think they are a good buy at £175. They are geniune OZ's and the writing on the wheels are printed on, not stickers. They have been used and need a lick of paint but what do you expect from used wheels. I like them anyway!! I took them to a tyre place and found out 1 was a bit bent, 2 would be fine to go on the rear and the other 3 were fine so i was happy with that.

Then that bring us up to the weekend... A bit of progess has happened thanks to a few Lowdownvw.com members.

First of loads of bits and bobs were taken out of the engine bay ready to take the old engine thanks to Tom (tdh-syorks) and Joe (caddymancan) and then this morning Tom and Simon (sivo444) came up and after lots of pain in the arse bolts and lack of tools the old engine is out.

The gearbox is going to come off as it should fit the new engine.

That leaves a big gap in the engine bay...

A couple of weeks ago i bought this off ebay for a bargain price of £185. Its a 1.6lt 16v Polo 6n2 GTi engine. Big thanks to Liam (Scene Mincer) for collecting this for me.

And in the meantime the dash and heater has come out so the inside of the car is proper bare!

The next step is to borrow Michael's (Michael) engine crane so the gearbox can be test fitted to the new engine and then placed in the bay to see how it'll be able to be mounted.

So the future plans involves roll cage, subframe, bike carbs, megajolt, digi dash, fibreglass seats, polycar windows and possibly a charger but who knows! Nothing major is going to happen now until after Christmas now as i've spent loads on it so far and it's just gonna get more expensive.

If you start seeing my name coming up asking some probably silly questions then please excuse me as i've never taken on something like this before so i don't really have a clue what i'm doing!

All comments welcome!

Wow, cool ideas, maybe one to watch.

the plans sound awesome man :)

A tried and tested combo, be good to see how you execute it, the wheels should stay white by the way!

Have a look at the faq for mounting the engine...

good progress, you want to swap headlights and indi's for my all clear un-tinteds? or at least let me try them on?

  • Author

The headlights and indicators are not tinted. They were covered with fly eyes vinyl. It's good stuff and cheap, I've got them on my mk4 golf. For sale on either flyeyes.co.uk or flyeyes.com

Cheers Slacker might have to give you a shout once they are ready.

Wicked thread. Alos what sizes did you get for the tints?

Ah right, yeah I know unstone , don't suppose you know of any lock up or garage space available do you? I'm desperate for somewhere to put my coupe whilst I work on it through the winter etc, you know of anywhere?

I finally came to the conclusion that I didn't have the skills to see this though so the shell has gone to the big scrap yard in the sky.

Game over!
