Legality of running indicators in headlights

Featured Replies

thinking about relocating the indicator inside the headlight unit and maybe putting the sidelight where the indicator was if possible or are there units already available?

is it legal to do so?

has anyone done it?

Cant see much of an issue but they wont be very clear at night.

After all old beetle's have the indicator bulb in the headlight.

Yep, as said above it's not a problem, however with the headlights on, it probably wouldn't show up that clearly.

What you could do is fit a side light bulb and holder into the indcqtor itself.

It's been done and I have a set somewhere for the 6n though.

Pretty straight forward really in terms of fitting, just drill a hole in the same place on both indicators, fit thelight holders and either splice the two wires into the headlight connector on theheadlights themselves ( and have both the side light in the headlight and the new one on at the same time), or remove the bulb and extend the wires.

Hope this helps buddy.

The Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 seem to say that there needs to be a 40mm separation.

Regards.

That's not actually true. The indicator was in front of the headlight, then an outer lens covered both those separate lights and the carrier plate they were mounted on.

^^ Again, shares only the clear outer lens and is in the assembly, but is not in the headlight itself - it's not in the headlight bowl and therefore doesn't light up the bowl. Doesn't interfere or interact with the headlamp unit.

Keeping with the MK4 Golf, the sidelight bulb IS in the main beam lamp, and therefore lights it up. Doing this with an indicator is what i believe to be illegal, same with the indicator lighting up a patterned headlamp lens. So you can't put an indicator in a 6n headlamp, for example.

I agree, I'd personally leave the indicator as it is and Put the sidelight in the indicator housing.

Legalitys aside the indicator bulb would barely show up against even the weakest headlight bulb, so having no indicator at all will probably be better.

Although tbh it took a team of disgners and engineers months of hard work to make them so who are we to rubbish there design?

mk4 golf / bora etc etc etc all work, you can remove the assembly from golf and bora headlights and fab something up

how bright did the indicators light up though?

Indicators would be the same brightness as normal Because it's a separate bulb.

A sidelight bulb is 5w and a standard indicator bulb is 21w so it should be fine.
