Featured Replies

Just wondering what cams people would reccomend for a GT?

Only one I've found is a fastroad cam by PhilJ

Cheers

  • I'm told more than that needs the pistons machining to allow the valves to clear.

  • Ahh fancy seeing the pistons I sold on here of all places! Awesome to see they're being put to good use.

I think he's selling newman cams (there's not really another supplier of aftermarket camshafts to speak of) spec sheets are here - http://www.newman-cams.com/pdf/volkswagen.pdf (page 1). I'm told you can't really go past the 264/264 on a standard GT because the pistons will say hello to the valves.

Hmm looking at that the road cam seems the better option as i dont want to lose accelleration really.

Are they worth it on the GT as i was told the GT cam is quite a high lift anyway?

Cheers for that link BTW, really helped :)

The GT cam is a lot of what gives the car it's go. From what I've seen at the club RR day, very roughly speaking, you're looking at about a 5-10bhp gain depending how well set up it is and what other mods you're running. But the flipside is you get a lumpy idle and worse fuel usage. I personally wouldn't change from standard.

Cant decide on it, i do fancy a cam as its the only major-ish mod i can think of for my GT that doesnt cost the world, all other mods are just small like air filter, dewedge throttle body etc.

Need someone whos cammed a GT before to see how they found it

I have a Newman cam in my car, from Phil, he supplied and fitted it

Got a 4 branch and exhaust (also from Phil)

Air filter

Poloace 8k chip

Really has transformed the car and really brought the other mods together, made it into what the gt should have been like from the start. It's not super quick (90-95bhp) but good fun to drive (and I run a g40 as a daily)

Yes you can take the mods on the car even further, but there isn't much more that is reasonable money. Just a golf afm and dewedged throttle body

I have a 4 branch, exhaust and 8k chip so i guess the cam would go well with them, just dont know whether its worth the money?

Did you get the fastroad cam?

Schrick, Piper and Cat Cams also do aftermarket cams for the Mk2f Polo.

Newman do a copy of the 268° Schrick, which works very well in a GT.

i just got a newman 268. £185 to my door :) be easy to fit on yours as the timing marks are actually of use unlike my mk4 haha

Cheers :)

a mate of mine had a schrick cam in his with 8k chip and stainless 4 branch and system and it used to go off the clock in 4th, so a massive difference. :)

what would you class as standard??

easier said than done as well :L no way of using thicker gaskets or something to lift the head up?

Schrick (or Newman copy) 268° is fine on stock head and pistons.

I would have said a 272* is aswell.

Phill will check for you anyway...

(Y) ok cool, you know where best place to get a schrick cam from is? or are the newman cams just as good?

slight hi jack here

does any of the manf make the cams with the mech fuel pump drive?

Mine off Phil is compatible with a mechanical fuel pump.

Quality isn't quite as good, but you pays your money. On mine this just meant that the bits in between the lobes weren't as well finished as you might find on a schrick. When I was looking the Schnrick was something like £80 - £100 more expensive, and difficult to get hold of.

They both do the same job at the end of the day. Both work the same.

Good thing about Phil, is i had a slight issue with my cam, and Phil sorted it out for me, no problems.

My cam has been good for 7k and engine is still going in my Derby. I have faith in the cam and how it performs in the GT engine. Remember I am taking out a G40 engine, to run this, as the engine is simple and does the job needed

Schrick (or Newman copy) 268°/268° is definitely okay, been there, done that! So you can go beyond a 264°/264° item, 272°/272° might be okay - but I've not tried it.

I do know that the Piper VPHBP300H cam (actually 280°/280°) did need slight valve cut-outs in the pistons when we tried one in a 3F lump in Yoof's car. From memory it was just about okay without the cut-outs, but given that it gives you a powerband up to just shy of 8,000rpm you're taking the piss a little with the hydraulic tappets, so we went with some valve cut-outs to be on the safe side.

Ran the Schrick 268/268 'Fast Road/Race Cam' in my old GT with no problems - it was GREAT!!!!!!

Along with other mods but with a standard head the 1.3 lump was good for over 100hp.
