isnt the 268/268 cam the best option for a turbo G40? i may be getting my wallet out if they are selling them

not sure, i know newman do a 264/268 which states is designed for the supercharged engine?

would any of you guys be able to tell me if a newman cam, or similar, would work on a standard mk2 1.3? because all you guys are using gt engines arnt you?

I can't find any trace of Phil Jackson Tuning any longer.

My question is will a 268/268 cam, schrick or newman be compatible with kolbenschmidt 11:1 pistons? I'm not sure if there is a height difference. As always, i acknowledge i have arrived 15y too late for the party.

think you are mixing valve lift with duration.

Mechy engines fun starts at 292 duration.

The GK engine has 11:1 compression due to smaller bowl in pistons than HK. Head is flat, standard inlet lift is 8.4mm. Lift over ~9mm needs valve pockets cutting in piston crown. Worse if head skimmed (ignoring gasket thickness adjustments, or lash caps and custom rocker arm geometry tricks).

Piper cam VPHBP285H is 268/268 with 10.87mm lift. No mention of valve pockets.

It's a GT 3F hydro head. I have a set of 11:1 Kolbenschmidt pistons that i will be fitting sometime, but i need to know if the height of the piston has been increased to attain the higher compression. If it has i will need to take this into account when i order a better cam. The GT head is a flat face, so i'd guess the piston height has to be the same, but you know what they say about assumptions being the mother of all...

Are the crowns of the VAG 10:1 and the Kolby 11:1 identical?

That aside, i'm also a bit confused about the benefits/drawbacks of the 268/264 grind cams. Most posters on here have gone for a symmetrical 268/268.

Motor Service catalogue should reveal the dimensions from centre of pin to crown.

Fairly sure height will be the same and the bowl in the piston will be smaller than lower compression pistons. That's how my GK is 11:1 static CR.

The dynamic CR is lower with longer duration cam.

I have some oversize Honda 75.5mm pistons that might give 12:1 CR with the right custom conrods.

So what cam is recommended for the GT? Are the Schrick 268/268 and the Newman 268 both as good? The only thing i can spot with the Piper 268 grind is that the valve lift is higher. I'm running waisted GrpA valves so the donut shaped area around the valve seat that mixture passes through before exiting the barrel shaped area opened up above the valve head is very slightly larger than normal.

I've always thought that the very highest lift figures were only of any use in a big valve head, and that unnecessary lift should be avoided. For that reason i'd be inclined to go for 9.3mm lift and not 10.6; so Schrick over Piper in other words.

says the bowl is 16.27mm deep.

and compression height 42.87mm.

Valve cutout 2.12mm

And that's the same as the GK piston compression height. For a Mahle it's .05mm less.

So the valve can go a gnat's whisker deeper. Gasket tolerance isn't even that accurate.

Using 052107065AK says it's for the GK.

030107065P for 3F has same compression height but wider bowl 13mm deep.

As for shorter duration on exhaust valves, that helps improve lower rev range torque.

Conventional wisdom is exhaust pulses are then stronger, so good for turbo too (assuming Sodium filled exhaust valves) as also hotter.

What about a new set of hydraulic lifters for the GT head? Newman list them for £80, but the Schrick ones are a lot more. If you're getting a Schrick cam is it wise to get Schrick lifters?

I'm guessing stock valve springs are good for 6000rpm so won't need changing?

I had a 268 cam and Schrick lifters to put into mine a good while back before I sold up almost all my 8V stuff, the Schrick ones are lighter than standard ones, not sure about the Newman ones. People run standard lifters in their 8K chipped GT's with no bother at all.

If its a GT double valve spring head they'll happily do 8000 rpm without issue on the standard double valve springs. If you need some stronger ones, I have some brand new DBilas ones I never used that allow up to 13.0mm of max valve lift that I still have lying about in their box.
