Definitive mk2/3 rear disc conversion guide

Featured Replies

just to add i do run my calipers in front of the wheel and not at the back that could be why i have had no problem with length but I'm sure the mk2 golf ones are longer anyways just as long as it has a male connector at one end and i female at the other and both are m10x1 fitment then it will be fine and fit as long as lengths good

GT compensator is a bolt on fitment in the original place, but will require modification of the hardlines. I have a spare i may be persuaded to part with. PM me. The carriers question is a good one.

so i did some hunting today and picked up this lot: mk3 golf gti stub axels £30 mk2 golf gti rear brake carriers, although i asked for mk2 golf items, the ones he gave me have polo and passat w

i know which thread you are talking about and it is already in the faq, but as you said that only really cover's the cable issue, in this thread i am trying to cover the whole conversion process and w

That would make sense then Pete why mine needed the little hardline. Makes me glad I haven't been a total spaz :retard:

so in theory i have everything i need now as i ordered the handbrake adapters from ebay.de and i also have a full set of brand new standard polo handbrake cables for good measure :)

i will take lots and lots of polos when it comes to fitting!

Nice one craig.

Will have a look at this before i do mine.

ok so i got some more done on the conversion today

it seems that to use the standard polo handbrake cables you need to flip the cable stoppers the opposite way around to normal as the cable will be too short, but this method works spot on because i hooked it all up to check :)

you can see in these pictures:

the calipers do need a fair bit of grinding down to clear 13's:

theres much more clearance than it looks like in this pic

Axel and brakes fitted on tonight and it has worked a treat ;) discovered there is still clearence issues with the brakes fouling the back of the spokes but no big deal its only a little bit, nothing a little rub with a file wont sort!

ok so i went to the breakers yard this morning to do some hunting for a suitable brake line and it turns out the standard flexi has a built in hard line which can be shortened and then connected to the existing flexi line on the polo

and on the car

although is still haven't bled the system yet as i just mocked it up before removing it all again to be painted :)

Fantastic mate, well done!

Could you get a definitive list of parts up then please? This thread is still a bit confusing as to what EXACTLY is needed.

Cheers!

What are you using max? MK2 Golf or later MK4 stuff?

For use of the MK2 calipers you will need

MK2 Golf 16v stub axles

Mk2 Golf 16v Steel Calipers and Carriers

MK2 Golf 16v Rear discs and pads

Two M10 x 1 male/male convex ended connectors to go into the calipers

Custom handbrake adaptors

Rear beam mounting brackets flipped as mentioned above

Custom HEL rear braided lines around 650mm long with M10 x 1 fittings (specify the ones that go through the holes in the brackets on the rear beam in picture below)

I think thats it. This has by far been the biggest hassle on my car (the whole braking system really)

In addition to the above, I have added a GT bias valve inline complete with GT rear beam auto load adjust spring

I'm experimenting with polo 6n2 rear discs too atm, I'm sure they'll work. When Roxy's on the road, I'll get up a guide for fitting those too. Step by step, part numbers etc.

right then so a definitive list of parts needed to convert using the mk4 calipers as they have less seizing issues apparently? also they are readily available from leons, boras, golfs and probably more!

alloy rear calipers (mk4 golf, bora and leon)

rear brake lines from the same car, just snip the hardline about 6 inches after the flexi

i replaced all my handbrake cables although it isnt necassery if you are on a budget!

handbrake cable adapters from german ebay (will insert link soon)

mk3 golf gti stub axles

mk2 golf gti rear carriers (narrower than mk4 golf carriers!)

i specified mk2 golf gti rear discs pads and bearings but obviously they are avalable from lots of models

COMMON SENSE!

all this can easily be had from a breakers yard with some common sense, as i have said it is all available from many different models, i just said what i removed them from.

I've been watching this for awhile, and i figured id use the mk2-mk4 golf goodrich conversion hoses for the calipers as their only about 37 quid. but its a good idea if your mk4 calipers come with the stock rear hoses..

To those who have already done this, does it affect your pedal traval? As mine seem to be biting well but its right at the bottom for sone reason, i bled the while system and its still no different...

you HAVE to run a bigger master cylinder, as the discs require more fluid being pushed.

i think the biggest one you get get is 24mm off a sharan or T4

ahhh never thought about this... was thinking it was a bit of a low bite yesterday when bleeding them.

what about us no servo'ed people?? :)

I suppose you could either cut the rod from the pedal box and use a servo'ed MC or space it out?

The mk2 has a 17.46 master cylinder.. do you think a 20.64 will be big enough?

I've gone 22.5 from a golf mk2 gti. All the parts on mine are golf gti items.

Ahh sweet and you just cut the pedal rod?

Yep, about an inch iirc. However, the reservoir doesnt fit at that, so I've had to make my own set up (see build thread for full details)

I managed to easily sort the issue by adjusting the master cylinder push rod, simply undid the lock nut and wound the pushrod in with some pliers until the pedal felt more normal and bobs your uncle ;) been using them for a week now and they are great!

I used a g60 22.5mm master cylinder and cut the rod down with no servo and my brakes were amazing not much pedal travel (il be selling all this soon though as I'm fitting a bias pedal box)

And for reservoir I got one off a mk1 golf and it fitted perfectly

I would be a little bit careful as you might find you run out of travel on the master cylinder a lot sooner if you experience brake fade on the road/track. Effectively you are just running with the brakes applied slightly (pre loading the calipers) to compensate for the extra fluid you have to move due to the rear calipers. Also if you change the brake fluid again you will have to wind the rod back first to where it was and then once full and bled adjust it back to how it is now. Otherwise you will have the same problem.... I think! :-D

you might not have any problems but just keep it in mind, the last thing you want is your brakes disappearing after giving it some stick! :)

let me know when you sell up and if its soon I might have them off you~! :)
