MOT fail - sidelights + extra £30 charge

Featured Replies

Before you read all this and rant at me , i acknowledge the bulb type and should expect the outcome but its the charge.

Yesterday my partners heap , ford ka was failed on mot

One of these reasons being "side lights not working"

1. I know they work as her lights were on , on the way to the test centre (I drove up we left car overnight)

2. There not stupid chavvy lights

3. Its a wedge bulb that emit’s white lights (NOT BLUEISH) totally white , around the 4500k – 5000k mark I would say , there not exactly halogen yellowish .

4. They have charged us for “trying” to do repairs , they have taken these bulbs out and set them aside.

5. There was no agreement for extra work , the MOT its self cost us £45 + the extra charge.

Are they trying to pull out leg? The bulbs (Are not E marked , fair enough there illegal and should be the answer to my question really but £30 charge?) There not Emarked yet my car passed with them , My friend with the same bulbs passed with them , and also on his rear numberplate. And numerous people around my area have the same bulbs as I brought tons and gave loads away

My question really is , how many of you guys out their have LED / SMD sidelight and put the car though an MOT with them?

The light bounces nicely around the reflectors and next to a normal bulb they looks near the same just whiter and every so slightly brighter.

Another thing is this £30 charge which is bullshit in my eyes, they should have contacted us before…..

Altough we will recive a bill , we have not signed anything in wet ink nor verbaly agreed on a contact to say they can carry out work.

id refuse to pay it bro. fuck that! u didnt ask them to take them out

They should have consulted you before doing it, its there own fault for not doing that so any work carried out you shouldn't pay for imo

My partners father knows the guy at the garage and they do bits of work for eachother.2 diffrent trades So he paid the £75 for us to avoid all the bullshit

The garage said the bulbs in the car were blue..

I argued this point and they just went quiet.

The bulb colour is under 6k for sure , as said before about 4.5 to 5k colour so there very white but not blue

Although we didnt pay the charge on the recipt it has down

2 side light bulbs @ £3.34 (99p a pair in wilkos)

fitting of sidelight bulbs 20 mins @ £8.01

20 mins to fit sidelights in a KA - its easier then a polo 6n it took me a matter of seconds! and thats getting into the car , finding the bonent pull , finding the clip under and putting them in + testing

What they did charge her for was "investigating" a handbreak fault, We DID NOT agree to this as we didnt know although charging an hours work to find its the tentioner clip in the drums i could have bloody told them that, I'm not mechanic but jesus..............

So yeah , will avoid them at all costs in the future , will be getting her car into the garage i always use as there fantastic and only £30 MOT.

But yeah , infact the charge wasent for the bulbs it was for a handbreak fault they "tried" to fix and investigate.. which in its self is bullshit , even more is paying £10+ for bulbs in a ford KA

I would understand the charge for my 9n as the bumper idealy needs to be dropped , sidelights can be done but dipped beam cant

I put a Polo in for an MOT three weeks ago, it failed on a sidelight bulb (wasn't even one in the holder, I completely over looked it)

Anyway the garage just chucked one in and passed it and I just got charged the price of the MOT.

I'd kick up a fuss if I were you.

I had those 20w bulbs(Vauxhall Astra front indicator bulbs) fitted in my sidelights up until recently. The garage said they were too bright for sidelights, even though the young lad there said it was the dim dip system(it wasn't, but bless him for trying for me)

Anyway, they removed the bulbs and replaced them with stock, but no charge at least.

They were just arses ,Although not E marked

Emited WHITE light , Reflected around the reflector , and not dim/not bright

They claimed there BLUE , not blueish BLUE

20w sidelight bulbs :o , bet they were bright lol

having said that on my polo 9n , i went in for an aircon service at VW and they charged me £3 or 4 for a blown rear sidelight bulb without telling me + i brought a set of 10 on ebay for £1.50 anyway..

garages....

So he paid the £75 for us to avoid all the bullshit

fairly pointless worrying about it now then, if it's been paid then the money is gone. Live and learn and go somewhere else next time.

They shouldn't have done the work without phoning you up first to ask if you actually wanted them to or not.

thats pretty crap mate! My dad had silver tec bulbs (silver but flash orange) in his crystal side repeaters once, and they swapped the bulbs for orange ones without telling him. The only reason they would of had to do that is if they wanted the silver tecs (which had only just come out, and were expensive) for themselves, we only noticed a few days later.

Oh, and my MK3 has been through an MOT with Blueish headlight bulbs AND LED sidelights

Sound like a right bag of cocks, if that's how they treat some one who's a close relative of some one that does favours for them I'd hate to see how they treat a randomer. Not a lot you can do now bit avoid them and make sure every one you know knows that they are rip off merchants
