Hello, I'm looking at getting my project on a MK1 Polo rolling, as my parents have agreed the lend me the dollar needed

Anyway, i was wondering if any or yous has a rough idea of how much paint/money it will cost me to respray the whole car, inside and underneath myself?

This will include, primer, colour and lacquer..

Just a close idea will help, as i want to start putting money cost together.

I've not sprayed a whole car before, but i've refurbed many alloys before, touched up on many cars that have hard rust forming.. So i'm pretty sure what to do.. :-)

Back on topic. Do you have any of the tackle to do this? Ideally you'll want a decent sized compressor as well as a spray gun and shit loads of other stuff. Obviously using rattle cans and going for a Matt finish would be cheaper than buying all the stuff to do it properly if you don't have access to it but as cool as it can look you still can't get away from the fact it looks half arsed.

bro seriously, unless the paint is foooooked and you have an airgun or your top dog at spraycans, dont do it. i found out the hard way!!!

5 L of primer with 1 L harder £60

Paint depends on what type basecoat metallic is roughy £45 a litre 2k paint will much cheaper

Laquer kit if needed (depends if you choose bascoat if so you will need it)£60

Body Filler 5 L £20

Sandpaper 80 120 320 500 grit etc varys etc

Masking tape 1/4 inch 2 inch £3 a roll

Roll of masking paper £25

Sanding block to rub filler £20

Body hammers £10 - £20 on eBay that is

All prices vary just depends were you get if form

You need a compresser and water trap spray gun (a good 1 ) buffer to buff paint up half flatting and ploishing

I am a body man and have bin doing it for years and in some cases when people take on this types of jobs when they know notin about body work and repainting they tend to make a very bad job of it and can cost twice as much to fix there's a lot mre to it the just rubbing the paint down and repainting the car

My dad has a compressor, i have a spray gun, and also a massive buffer..

I've got a garage to keep the car in whilst spraying, to prevent any shit getting on it whilst it's still wet.

But i mainly just want it to be shiny, and if i buff it enough, i'm sure it will get a mirror finish.. hopefully

As my other plan was to get quotes too

If your doing it in a normal garage then invest in some plastic sheeting to put on the walls, ceiling and floor to try to cut back on dust cause no matter how much cleaning you do in advance there will still be loads in there ready to stick to your nice shiney wet paint.

If your doing it in a normal garage then invest in some plastic sheeting to put on the walls, ceiling and floor to try to cut back on dust cause no matter how much cleaning you do in advance there will still be loads in there ready to stick to your nice shiney wet paint.

Live in ireland buddy sorry please beleve there is a lot more to the job the just rubbing down paint and taping the car and putting paint in the gun and repainting the car there's the filler work all the tecnical aspects like flash times etc there a lot to learn espeacily if you want a mirror finish

But there's no law that's says can't be done just need to know what your at if you go ahead do your home work

Inside, bay, underneath? Easily double my original quote. Personally I'd spray the same colour and waxoyl the underneath.

I was going to just respray the outside, but with the MK1', you can see the body colour inside, so would look abit of a mess just doing the outside lol, unless of course i respray it the original colour, but the one i have my eye on is red, and i don't like the red

yeah it stayed like that...polished and waxed to protect it :).... took allot of time though of the prep takes along time and masking ...the actual paint and primer stage only took a few days ...but then becuse it was my first time i did end up with orange peel ...and that took like a month just flatting the paint down and then polishing will defo need a proper da or rotary polisher and some cutting compound :)

i belive i use just over 2 liters mate mixed 50/50 1k paint/thinners

prob about 1.5 of primer again mixed 50/50

no laquer as it is a single color paint

all the equipment.... Do you have water traps, extractors, correct lighting (not just 2 strip lights) a DA, heaters (non fuel heaters), sanding blocks, PATIENCE, a good knowledge on how to set up a gun?

All of which will greatly affect the finish and time scale in which it takes. Personally i'd either do panels that need it in the original colour or dont bother. Quite a substantial amount of work in spraying..... :-)

Ok, i don't have everythinggg, but i'm not too worries, i'll do the bonnet first or something, see how it comes out, if i'm happy, i'll do each panel one at a time

Cheers for all that, knowing the measurements roughly will be useful for finding out prices, as a MK1 is around the same size as a MK4..

Just gotta go about finding the perfect car to start with.
