Been talking to a guy in work recently and found out he has a mini sat in a shed which he wants rid of, I'm interested in buying it off him but the problem is it has no tax or mot and the sorn ran out a while ago. He is a registered owner. if i was to buy the car from him and fill out the v5 as me being the new owner would i get any sort of fine due to the car not being sorn when i buy it or would the previous owner get some sort of fine ??

has anyone had any previous experience with this or any idea of the situation.

Buy it, send off the logbook, when it comes back go online and declare it sorn and that'll be the end of the matter, no fine for you.

I've just done the same with a Mk.2 Polo and about to put the logbook in the post.

when you get the V5 back SORN it straight away.

You're actually supposed to SORN it at the same time as you take ownership (i.e. previous owner sends off the V5) - or that's how it used to be. I once bought an untaxed, unSORN'd car and got a fine from the DVLA at pretty much the same time as the new V5 arrived!

yup, what andy said, when you send off V5c i think it is, send a SORN at the same time. they have it all the time, they normally give you a month or so leeway anyway. just make sure the logbook and everything is in order

You should complete form V890 (sorn declaration) and send it to DVLA at the same time the V5C gets sent.

Make sure you receive an acknowledgement letter for the sorn declaration within four weeks, if you dont receive one you are supposed to contact DVLA to find out why.
