Basically, I'm considering getting a mk4 golf, looking at the 1.4 16v. At the moment have had a 1.3 mk3 coupe for nearly a year now. I love it, Love how nippy it is. But standard. It just doesn't do it for me sometimes. Because insurance is a bitch, and i can not do all my plans i wanted to such as lower and alloys cause when i phoned them up they raged. Anyway turns out its cheaper to insure a golf, Some how.

I've heard they aren't the quickest cars about. But that doesn't really bother me anyway. And i've always liked the look of them standard anyway. So modifing wouldn't bother me. Currently looking at a 1.4 16v with 75k mileage and 10 service stamps for about a grand. Is this too cheap?

Just wondering what people have heard about them because was speaking to someone and they said the 1.4 have a fair few problems. Just want to be aware of what problems so IF i go to look at one I have my eye on i'd have an idea what to look out for.

Nah £1000 sounds about right, my mate just paid £900 for one with same mileage and service history as the one you're looking at.

They are not actually THAT slow, it will probably be quicker than a 1.3 mk3 polo anyway assuming its not a GT. Nice interiors compared to a mk3 polo as well.

However, they are quite boring to drive, I've got a 1.8t MK4 which is double the power of the 1.4 and started to get bored of that after a couple of months (nothing that couldn't be sorted with a remap)

If you want a mk4 golf (still don't know why some people do ) then for the love of god, avoid that engine

75 bhp and naff all torque trying to move 1.4 tonnes or so of car isn't good, a few friends have had them, one constantly weeped oil from the gearbox even though the seal was replaced twice, the other had 3 gearboxes in as many months! Also, £1k does sound a bit cheap, save some more pennies and at least get a 110 TDi or 1.6, better cruisers and less mechanical woes!

Thats the problem. I cant modify it. Otherwise it would spend the money slamming it. Which was the plan until the day before i brought the kit when i happened to fancy just checking with the insurance who tried to void my insurance as the f**king foreign idiot didnt listen to what I said.

Fuck getting a 1.4 75BHP MK4 Golf. Even if your not bothered about speed they are still a bad idea. You will start to get annoyed when you get stuck behind stuff thats slower than you and you can't over take it because you can't make up enough speed.

Last time I drove one of those I was going up to Preston with 4 in the car and bags for a week. Felt like an eternity.

I don't know if my mates 1.4 has had a secret engine conversion by the granny that owned it before him but it actually seems to pull really well. Certainly as quick as my old 1.4 8v 6n and that was quick enough to overtake if you drove properly.

Saying that though I personally would get bored of it really quick, as I said I got bored of my 20vT mk4 after a couple of months.

Fuck paying a grand for a 1.4 mk4, in the last couple of months a mate has bought two of them from eBay, one for a 300 iirc and the latest one for 250. Both with long mot's and running, the first one did have the common issue of worn rings which he has changed and the cams had play in them making it noisy and run rough at idle when cold, swapped the rocker for one from another engine and its fine. Second one had a dodgy drivers door lock and the battery wasn't charging (a wire had come off the alt), both will be sold on at a nice profit

Anyone that's trys to say they ain't painfully slow is smoking crack, and they are pretty shit on fuel too due to them needing to be driven hard because of all the weight the vastly underpowered lump is trying to move.

That said they are comfy to drive and have luxuries that an early polo could only dream of. The interior is quite a nice place to be too, just don't get a small engines one. Tdi's make a lot of sense in mk4 golfs and when tuned the 1.8t's go well, suprizingly dull as standard tho which was a bit surprising tbh

But if it was me I'd be looking at bora's, look 10x better, massive amounts of useable space and might even be cheaper to insure than a golf of the same spec

i think they look good,are solid and nicely presented and a much needed improvement on the mk3 lol

and there is a plenty of engines to drop in them without too much hassle

6n's a lot lighter but yea, kinda impossible

I wouldnt go for the 1.4 Golf I've come across a few in my time in the trade the engines are under powered and the mounts carnt cope with the weight.

They also seem to blow up around 80K

You may as well get a diesel as the 1.4 16V just burns oil . . . . . . . . .

A Bora is such a good shout! I'm actually gonna have a look see what is about. If I was to get a mk4 more looking at 1.6 now. Especily as the insurance is still cheaper than my polo. WTF.
