1.4 106. Hmmmmmmm.

106's are french crap! So are badly designed/made, a mate of my Dads who has a garage hates when he has anything french come in, as they are apparently a pain to work on. And ford Ka's are the worst car ever. Almost every girl i know has 1 or had 1, and that says it all. Plus they rot like crazy, i've seen 2002's with rotten sills and holes round the filler flap. Mk4 Golfs with the small engines are SHIT, everything wears out quick because the engines/ gearboxes arent up to the job lugging their lardy ass around. And they're so dull to drive. Your polo's a nice solid shell, and a good base car. You should keep it and you could just wait for mods. I did. I drove a standard MK1 for 2 years until i got my MK3 and then i started modding. If you want any other Dub, i'd suggest a Lupo 1.4 16v. Same engine as the golf, and almost half the weight. I've been in 1 (gearbox was buggered so didnt buy it) and it really was pretty rapid, cheaper to insure than a Golf too .

I had a 106, well easy to work on and wasn't a bad car at all.

Also had a mk3 golf 1.4SE which only have 59hp standard and that wasn't that slow and was dirt cheap to insure too.

I'd suggest looking at Bora's myself i had a 2.0SE (Same engine as Golf GTI) and reasonably quick and only group 8 insurance! Not bad on fuel either for a 2litre! Sold it for £550 :L Interior is top quality too!

Bora's are so cheap! (starting at £500 on auto trader i've seen)

The 1.6 16v model is an insurance group 6/6e, and the 2.0 8v is an insurance group 8/8e

and they look sick!

Basically, I'm considering getting a mk4 golf, looking at the 1.4 16v. At the moment have had a 1.3 mk3 coupe for nearly a year now. I love it, Love how nippy it is. But standard. It just doesn't do it for me sometimes. Because insurance is a bitch, and i can not do all my plans i wanted to such as lower and alloys cause when i phoned them up they raged. Anyway turns out its cheaper to insure a golf, Some how.

I've heard they aren't the quickest cars about. But that doesn't really bother me anyway. And i've always liked the look of them standard anyway. So modifing wouldn't bother me. Currently looking at a 1.4 16v with 75k mileage and 10 service stamps for about a grand. Is this too cheap?

Just wondering what people have heard about them because was speaking to someone and they said the 1.4 have a fair few problems. Just want to be aware of what problems so IF i go to look at one I have my eye on i'd have an idea what to look out for.

I've recently done this, I got a 1998 1.4 16v mk4 golf and I don't particularly like the look of it. But it runs perfect, drives perfect and I never have any problems. £500 a year for me to insure aswell, go for it I'd say, so comfortable to drive.

Thats more what i'm after. Just to cruise and be comfortable. Seriously wanting a bora tbh. Discovered they do a 1.4 bora apparently. Same engine as the golf?

never heard of a 1.4 bora? and if they do them, they're heavier than a mk4 golf iirc so will be EVEN slower!

also, the mk4 1.6 16v's are as fast as my TDI 6n2... and mines got one of those ebay tuning chips on!

i didnt realise either. But yano when you do an insurance quote for a car without reg plate. An option was a 1.4 bora with several different models aswell.

The car that got me into 'dubs and such was a 1M (mk1) Seat Leon TDI SE 110. I still miss that car, spent money on it making it quicker (around 190bhp/330+Ft/lb it ended up..) and it still returned 50mpg.

Pretty much a mk4 Golf but with a prettier body and a nicer interior.

If i dont end up with another old polo, I think I'm gonna get another one myself.

having owned many mk4's and boras and do alot of work on them, i'd opt for the 1.6 8v AKL engined bora.

the 1.4 is basically a polo engine coupled to mk1 golf gearbox, neither of which is really suited to the bigger weighty mk4 body, the boxes are chewed out regularly and are hard to get hold of because of this. engines start drinking oil and eating rings anywhere around 70k depending on how hard a life it's had.

they will eat driveshafts for fun if you're planning on lowering it much too

i recently sold a 1.4 16v mk4 i bought for my girl friend, got £1200 for it having replaced gearbox, clutch, brakes, ball joints etc and fitted gti interior, coilovers, gti clusters, gti allots, rub strips etc so 1k for a half decent one is a fair price.

the reason i'd go for the 1.6 8v is they are basically a scaled down 'big block' so has the better gearbox / shafts etc and are still cheap enough to run / insure.

iv a 115 bora sport and its not the quickest in the world but its really comfy. only group 7 or 8 insurance as well. the good thing with the bora is the size, its just a mk4 golf with a boot. nearly all the engines are carry across so just bear in mind the bora has more weight to it! think a 1.4 or a 1.6 is slow, the bora variant will be slower again.

it can be abit boring to drive so if your so if your after something small a bit of craic to drive the 106 wouldnt be bad. i used to have a wee 1.1 106 and its a class wee car to fly about in. always made me smile when it was getting raked. i think french cars are a love hate thing.
