Cut and shut momo boss?

Right i want to rectify a steering position issue.

When you remove the rubber cover of a momo boss there is four metal arms between where the steering wheel mounts and where the boss mounts to the car. I wondered if it were possible in shortening these arms. Basically cutting out about 25mm off each arm and then welding the two parts back together.

Wanted to know if something like this is safe? I know whatever product guarentee will be lost but i don't care about that. Short bosses are not readily available.

The welds and cutting would be done by an engineering place and not just a home brew effort.

Is this a completely stupid idea or something that could be done. Thinking if the welding was done by a good welder and really beefed up there shouldnt be an issue really?

isnt that bit supposed to depress if you nut it in an accident? i dont think i would want to chop it and get it welded back together

possibly but 99% of pre 80's cars didnt have um' so feck it hahaha! I'd go for it barney. If they are confident they you'll be reet I'm sure.

That's what I have read on the subject. The arms are bowed and at the bends there is a hole which I guess is where the point of depression would be. I would leave that bit as is and remove some of the material lower down. Maybe even the very bottom of the arms where they join the base?

I don't like unsafe modifications but at the same time I wouldn't fancy depressing that fucker in an accident anyway lol. I'll have a think....

go for it, jus get a harness instead of a normal seatbelt :)

I had a boss like that so i fully cut the steel bit off and drilled the correct pcd into the ally boss that pushes onto the steering rack i then fitted a snap off boss to it and a 3 inch dished wheel and it only sits as high as my standard mk2 wheel. Which is perfect as thats what i wanted and i know what your saying about slimline bosses there isnt really any. i would do what i have done rather than cut and weld mate that is seriously bodged and i wouldnt trust it as no guarantee it will keep concentric.

Ahh so you drill and tapped the very bottom of the boss, cutting away the arms completely?

As said if i was going to weld it would have been done at an engineering place who would make sure it sat completely as it is now just shorter. They said that they could do it very easily but your way sounds just as good if not better and easier.

I'm going to fit it as is and see how it feels anyway as the steering wheel i had before was dished about 5.5-6cm and the snap off is 60mm so with a flat wheel it might feel ok anyway.

Weldy weldy lol.

Tapping six threaded holes in the boss base should be pretty simple though.
