Is the module that controls the time delay on the mk2 interior lights intergral to the light holder, or somewhere in the loom? I'm looking at buying one from teh bay but its just the light, holder etc (bit that fits to the roof) but dont want to buy it if i need something else aswell

I didn't know that the Mk2 had an interior light delay.

think i have a spare one kicking about if its any use to you. the mk2 golf gti had them, but they dont fit in the polos as they are too bulky so you have to chop them up to make an inline module

yeah its built in a mk2 golf gti one...but they wont fit

maplins and the like sell a little noggin to fit inline , think its just a capacitor?

Mk2s have interior light delay? Mine doesn't at least, just a button the door that breaks the circuit to the light.

I was asking about golf gti ones. I thought they were the same as the polo ones. I wont bother then if i need to hack electrics up. It'll more likely go wrong and probably cause a fire in the roof lining or something

edit: will be clearer on what I'm asking about next time, and not make the rooky mistake of thinking all golf parts fit a polo

Lots of aftermarket alarms that trigger when a door opens have the option to use that same connection to power the interior light for a number of seconds etc. just to let you know in case you plan to fit such an alarm later. Toad Ai606 is one example.

You can use a yellow ford relay which keeps it on for 25seconds and fades off, simple-ish to install and does look quite nice.

just use a golf gti item modded! its plug and play and dead easy to make. find a golf with the time delay unit. remove it, make sure you chop the plug and some loom off the car you remove it from. now chop the unit down with a junior hacksaw till your left with the module and socket. Get the bit of loom with the plug and solder this on, so you are left with effectively an inline module. fit some heatshrink around it and some trim foam so it doesnt rattle, then fit inline with your interior light.

Got one just like this on my polo. its been in there 4 years and the car hasn't caught fire. 10 minute job.

With the ford relay. You have to also put it inline with the neg feed from the door switch and the neg side of the lift. But you have to add a perminant live ignition live and a ground. All found at the fusebox.

The advantage of this is that itstays on for longer and fades out slower. And also cuts off when the ignition key is turned. And iirc it comes on when you remove the key.

You can find the relay at any breakers yard, found inost higher spec older fords.

Both ways are easily doable, so it's up to you.

The one I have her has holes drilled in it for some reason, but what I can read is ;

926g 13c718 AA and n6eza ILLUMINATED ENTRY -12v

The colour is more of an orange then a yellow, but could just be dirt.

thanks. i like the way the ones in my transit work so wood like it in my car. like you say the light stays on for a bit or goes off when you start the car..

That would also work, but will not delay for as long as the relay. It would delay for around 10 seconds.

But anothar good option.

i was thinking about this the other day, surely you can buy interior bulbs with a capacitor built in for such retro fitting?

I'm sure they make them, but the delay would usually only be around 10 seconds. and because its a capacitor it needs time to charge up fully to get the max delay. i have tried many ways of doing this, even building my own delay circuit, but to be fair it cost more then the relay and blow up .
