Recently I'm having so much trouble deciding what car I want next. Thought I would go for a VR6, just to try it really, don't think I've ever heard more of a variety of opinions on a car than what I've heard for the VR6!

Bear in mind I'll be going from a mk2 GTI 8v to a VR6;

Are they noticably faster?

I read somewhere that the insurance group is similar to that of the mk3 GTI, is this true?

And don't worry... I already know they're crap on fuel

If you're gonna slag off the VR6, what would you suggest as an upgrade from a mk2 GTI?

Its an upgrade in speed and refinement

itll feel faster but it is a heavier car and the handling isn't there.

put the vr in the mk2, perfect solution all round.

If you wanna upgrade from a mk2 8v, the sensible answer is a mk2 16v. I went from a 16v to a vr and the mk2 actually felt quicker. Probably to do with the way the power is delivered more than any thing, the vr is rather lazy where as the kr in the 16v just loves to rev

The mk3 is just a generally shit car in looks and build but I've given my opinion on that enough so i won't bother again

I dont get the mk3 bitching. My mate has one and has had no problems with it bar a rattling heat shield. He has an 8v GTi so its unlikely to go pop, but i rather like it as a car. Makes and awesome noise.

Cant speak for the VR6 as an engine though

your mate must have got lucky then. my experience of mk3 ownership is similar to the masses. i.e. they are a bag of shite. Mine was a cabby with the 8v gti engine. nippy rather than fast, more thirsty than frugal and to top it off the plastics were the only thing holding the arches together.

Even compared to other V6's, they're crap on fuel. I was looking at them for a work barge a few years ago (I do a lot of motorway), compared to the big Jap I was driving at the time, they were at least 10mpg worse.

They're quick, but nothing special, and all the ones I drove seemed to have throttle lag. The drive as a whole was very uninvolving.

In terms of Mk3 Golfs, build quality's a bit like 6n Polos, yeah, everyones got a mate who'd got one that was mint, but there's not exactly many tidy ones about any more is there?

Upgrade to a Mk2 Golf, yeah, quick's good, but you deserve some fun after that. If you want to enjoy the skill of driving, get something small and light. If you want something with 4 wheels that you sit in and goes fast, there's plenty of stuff about. If you like mk2 golf GTI's, get an early 90's Audi Coupe.

Stick a VR in your Mk2 = instant upgrade.

Depending on what you like about the MK2, it'll likely be a mistake.

In my experience of both cars, the VR6 pulls notably harder and sounds much better whilst it does so.

Otherwise, it's all compromise. The steering and gearchange are not up to keeping you connected with the car, so it just doesn't involve you in such a lively way.

It feels bigger, heavier, more planted but not as agile, it covers the ground but it doesn't reward as much.

The best Golf i ever drove was a totally standard 3dr '85 GTi. Somehow it just felt better than a standard '88 5dr and i felt a heavily lowered '87 had been ruined by it's mods.

I've had a couple of Jettas but they were 1.6's and rather slow.

No Golf ever beat the Scirocco to drive. If i was replacing a MK2 Golf GTi, i'd get another Scirocco.

This is a VR6T but you get the idea.

I absolutely LOVED my VR mk3 and I'd still have it now if it didn't take the absolute piss on fuel The main reason I loved it so much was because it was dressed up as a 1.4 'Match' and I got to piss a lot of people off in it <3

If it was a standard VR and it still looked that way I would be a lot less interested. They don't look especially great and they aren't that fast or fun, but they are pretty cheap to insure for such a big engine and they sound lovely. The whole "converted car will cost more to insure than a non converted car" seemed irrelevant as far as I'm concerned because it was still pretty cheap for me!

Try it out for yourself :grin: Its not like you have to stick with one car for the rest of your life!

Thanks for all the advice everyone. I do want an involving drive, but at the moment the only thing I really do is motorway driving (400 miles every weekend) so I want a good comfy cruiser which can also be a good hoot when I get onto some A and B roads.

Audi coupe is a good point, any other ideas of an alternative to a VR6, good motorway cruiser being my main priority at the moment?

Phataz - Yeah my main reason for wanting one is just to try it really, but want it to be a decent car to 'try out' in the first place.

They certainly are decent They aren't as involved as say an early polo or golf, but they are definietly a thrill when you feel them pulling all the way to very illegal speeds And they are much more comfortable providing it has a decent suspension kit.

"to try it out" was the main reason I got mine, had my mk2 up for sale and got offered it as a swap and just thought why not... 3 weeks later it was back up for sale

Insurance wise I think it was the same as my mk2, I had to pay a fee to swap it but not much if any more for the insurance. Fuel wise I used to put the same in money wise each week as I did the mk2 too and I was doing the same kinda mileage each week although admittedly I probably drove the mk2 harder because it just loved to be thrashed

I was gonna do it to mine, but reading up on it I found out that the VR6 heads are really unsuitable for ITBs or bike carbs without loads of porting. Because they have such weirdly shaped uneven ports as standard it wouldn't give you any scope for more power. But they respond very well to forced induction because the port shape/size is less important...

That said, there used to be a video on streetfire.net years ago of a VR6 on triple webers It sounded fucking RIDICULOUS
