i fit hid kits on a regular basis, and the alternative pattern is due to the bulb actualy being longer than a standard one, the law doesnt say much as far as the colour is concerned, that is down to the nice constables discretion

however, the law says you must have automatic levelling and washing systems on your headlamps for them to be legal.

Think you may want to double check that last sentence with the new VOSA lighting guidelines with regard to Xenon retrofits.

Also aunties scenic has HID's but no wash system.

Last point is very relative, my Dad's Audi A8 (2008) doesn't have washers. Most people with cars with HID's don't have them...

The 'are they illegal or not' debate is so old, it's a wonder Jesus isn't sticking his two-pence in aswell.

They 'say' it's illegal to fit aftermarket Xenons without projector lenses, auto-leveling headlamps and a headlamp washer system, and in 2012 it'll be an MOT failure. As we've said many times before, they've said this every year since we began doing them (2008), and probably said it for many years previous. Will it ever become a serious issue? Highly unlikely. Theres only ever one person we know of to be pulled for their lights, and they had 12000k temperature bulbs, say's it all really.

As always, we suggest A) a sensible temperature (we advise nothing above 8000k), and B) make sure your beam pattern is correctly aligned. If you follow those bits of advice, you shouldn't have any problems regarding the law.

Like anything in life; be sensible, don't take the piss and you should be just fine.
