Update 20/04/2012 a few posts down , leak is back.

Hello there

Some of you may have read my old threads about a coolant leak

well , I found the source of it.

The pipes that entered the bulk head, Although the water ran down the OUTSIDE of the car , under the trays and onto the floor. So a tempory measure was to bypass the heater matrix and take it out the coolant loop.

Now , Today I need to get this fixed as I have my little baby girl in the car a lot and this weather is getting worse. I shouldn’t be driving with the state my windscreen is but I cant afford not too. I'm living on my own with my partner now.

So , My dad is going to help me today.

I just need to ask if anyone knows 1 , how to remove the tubes that poke out the bulk head or how to get some play so I can inspect them , or 2 how to get to the heater matrix its self , I cannot find anything on the internet , other then for older polos and my Haynes Manual isn’t much good for this.

Hi Martin,

Unfortunately, I haven't had any dealings with the heater matrix in the 9N.

As the coolant leak was going onto the ground, are you quite sure that it was not coming from the JOINT between the hoses and those pipe stubs? Could it be that all it required was some new hose clips? - Just a thought.

I've got the same car, same year and with the same problem! Does ayone know how the pipes attatch to bulkhead stubby pipes/ if clips are re-useable? Maybee somebody clever with computers can post an exploded diagram. Would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

The water seems to be running down the firewall , onto the trays and onto the ground.

I've removed the trays but realised it was then there.

Yesterday i got the glove box out , and some of the other trim. I have access to the blower but need to remove more to get to the heater

Adjusted my handbrake too , that was handy , and while its off ordered a new leather gear gator

As i bypassed the heater , that stopped the leaks which confirmed it was that , we reattached the pipes yesterday and so far no leaks.... (yet)

I noticed there was a run off , i presume when there’s condensation it can all just run out? unless thats for AC?

As the box is sealed, I thought it might leak into the plastic box and then when at a certain level leak out the overflow but... The pipes going into the bulk head seem loose.

Ignore all becs shit , had to scrap becs ford KA , now my cars full of her shit front and back

If you have got those spring type hose clips on, I would tend to change them for 'proper' Jubilee clips.

any updates on how you fixed this? mine is leaking from the same place

Would also like an update to your repair if pos please as think i have the same problem.

After the pipes where off for a while (going though bulkhead)

I put them back on with intention to top up the coolant as i have a baby in the car now

I re-attached the pipes so the heater came back into the loop and it's been fine.

Not a clue , must have been a loose hose but really cant see how....

I'm just waiting for it to go again

On a side note , Console bushes and coilovers went on today :)

Thought i would revive an old thread instead of making a new one.

It seems the leak has come back. It was good for a few months.

When I get paid and get some pump pliers, I’ll be disconnecting the pipes again.

Then maybe when I have the time taking the matrix out which I really don’t want to have to do….

Its annoying keep topping it up with coolant , I'm down to my last 1L

Hopefully that will last until payday too and I can buy some more.

After gooling it again today it seems that a fair few people are having the same leak on the outside of the firewall

Just seems strange that it was working for about 5 months without leaking then BANG happends again.

Although apparently not the same , I'm going to see after i bypass the matrix again if i can get this off and replace the seal / get new pipes and see if that sorts it

Once i figure it out ill post the fix up top as it seems a common problem

For the people who are having this same issue:

It turnt out to be the rubber washer on the pipe going into the heater matrix.

Just brought a rubber oring 418pc set on ebay for £6 as halfrauds selection didnt have the size.

I think it was on another site , or might have been on here. Some one said they replaced the metal tube and it fixxed it as they had a faulty one.

Think this only really applies to exterior leaks from that location
