Hostility from larger cars?

Featured Replies

say to them that because my car is old the reverse gear doesnt work so they have to go forwards.

Awesome idea.

I used to get aggressive and do what ever it took to piss them off in return. now I can't be arsed, I just drive it like its a BUS and make sure everyone knows i'm there if they want to overtake then I'll let them but I'll toot the horn if they are being twats.

I just feel like a tool when I use the horn, it's way to friendly sounding.

Just slow down a bit and let them past. No point driving like an equal tool as you could cause a serious accident! If they are proper close a couple of flicks of the fog light or hazards for me anyway usually works and they tail off a bit.

I've started driving more defensively in general, i use less petrol, hardly need to brake and have a more pleasant journey compared to the aggy yoof i once was

Got it in one.

I'm amazed at some of the stories though, and Yeti, your dad is a legend

Exactly - why stoop to their level?

Though I was coming down the motorway doing 70 in a van the other day. I was in lane 3 passing a couple of artics that were elephant racing when some tool came bombing up behind me, easily doing 3 numbers. He must have damn near done an emergency stop to get that close to my back bumper. He startted flashing me out of the way, so my foot slipped off the accelerator, and my perfectly reasonable 70mph overtake of a 40 footer became a 57mph overtake.... took a while and I don't think he was happy

Up may way I only ever get other cars annoying me in town driving.

I'm a firm believer in doing 30mph in a 30 zone but no-one and I mean no-one up here shares that thought.

I've constantly got an Audi Cock or a dwarf/rich mum in a 4x4 up my chuff in a 30 zone.

Yet out on the open road I am the only one who wants to do 60mph.

I just let them tailgate me most of the time, I have my fun when slowing for lights/traffic etc. I use the gears to slow down, not the brakes. Tailgaters being bad drivers can't handle a car slowing down with no brake lights so you get to watch them stamping on the brakes each time they realise they are about to rearend you.

^ so true nobody in town does 30mph always 35-40mph which wont change when the speed limit changes to 60 so i overtake when its safe then 5mins down the road it changes to 30mph and their right up my back side again. (a35 and a30 are terrible for this).

Its stupid really break the speed limits around schools and town centres with pedestrians and small kids running around everywhere but on a long straight wide 60/70 road or motorway they drive at 60% of the speed limit

Yep! Wholeheartedly agree!

Tailgaters are great fun, but when they dont overtake on a clear country road a quick tap on the rear fog light makes them brown there pants a little.

People bulling others, try being on the inside lane when a national express is in a rush, they sniff your bum crack all the way till your turn off (Even if your sat at a steady 70mph!

Hell yes, train horns are the way forward. Scare the living daylights out people who drive like twats (and everyone else within a mile radius).

When you drive a small car, you're seen as small and feeble, in many cases feminine, to all the people out there with 'little-man-syndrome'.

If they were hard enough to do it outside the car they might, but not until they get the feeling of power and intimidation through their hulk-cars can they really exercise it. It becomes a penis/handbag extension, (and it's usually a german vehicle running on diesel).

It tends to backfire on them in one way or other when they try it on me, but then given that i've been driving small cars for many years i'm used to it, and used to dealing with it.

Your options are sink or swim. Or sink to their level, or swim.. It's your choice, but it's a very real problem in my experience, and one you'll have to deal with, with whatever attitude you decide to adopt.

Yet again, Mikey hits the nail on the head!

Breaking it down nicely

I agree on this and drive in a manner based on similar principles. 30 in a 30, but on the open road driving up to speed, safely.

It is a case of people up-your-ass in restricted areas, or you not able to keep with them without breaking the speed limit, then come open road you may have "missed your slot" to get past their 40-50 mph "one speed" ass.

Another one i find annoying is "car users" not willing to over-take traffic. Content with a good old follow the tail lights/bumper of the car in-front. (which ends up being a precession of "car users").

I tend to plan an overtake based on visiblity (whether it is clear of oncoming traffic once through a corner). On roads that are familier as a driver, you know when to be in which gear whilst leaving a corner in case the opporunity arises for a safe overtake.

Other road users seem to take offense when they are overtaken i have noticed (flashing lights/fists etc). Here the offense increases if you have a smaller (and especially older "piece of old shit") car than they are driving.

Here lies our problem as a "driver". To try and maintain a good etiquette. Whilst enjoying driving.

The best solution is to buy very good spots and take to driving at 2-4am (or moving country).

I just had one, pulled out of a turning and accelerated to 30 then see an E46 getting closer and closer and weaving, so I go on the brakes gently and slow to 15 and stop him from attempting to overtake in a stupid place then take off again (slowly) to 30. I think he got the message, that I don't want to piss him off. I just want him to know I wont be a push over because i'm in a small car.

One thing i don't do is play with other drivers. I won't even slow down to let someone past, i'm not going to allow someone to change the way i drive, they can overtake when it's safe for them to do so.

I don't care if someone is on my ass, i will drive the same. I'm only interested in what's in front of me, nobody behind me exists and i drive accordingly. They won't hit me, they never do.

But if they ever do, i'll sue them for every penny i can get.

No, it's the games of chicken i'm on about, and again i don't change - if i have right of way and i'm committing to it, i'm taking it. It's their insurance that's gonna give me a nice compo package and a new paint job if they don't back down, and they always do.

But sometimes it's real close, and they don't always take it well..

I think round where I live there are so many old people that the speed limits are automatically 10 mph lower than the what the signs actually say. 20mph through town (signs for 30) and lucky to go over 50mph on roads that are national speed limit. I've even seen some old fucking codgers doing about 45 on the dual carriageway, even lorries were overtaking them...

The town of Diss in Norfolk, has to be one the least car friendly places to be. They have roundabouts on the only through-road. There are also traffic lights on each exit which are there so that all the old coffin dodgers (about 90% of Diss's population) can cross the road and go shopping in Morrisons. All this means is that the A140 through Diss has been turned into the most successful bottle-neck EVER! The apparent speed limit seems to vary between 10mph and 20mph on a good day. There are constant hordes of old people changing the lights to red, trapping cars on the roundabout and bringing the whole town to a standstill, so that Great Auntie Ethel can go buy some mince pies.

It wouldn't be so bad but some of them can actually drive (if you wanna call it that). IMO they deserve to be tailgated, maybe it will make them think before grabbing the car keys instead of the bus pass. They insist on going no faster than 20mph in the 30 zones and I don't think any of them can comprehend going faster than 40mph! People like that REALLY piss me off. If the road is a 60 limit, at least do 60? Obviously if someone is in something oldskool maybe with only 4 gears, then they can't help it. Its the ones in 61 plate BMW's and Audi Q7's that piss me off, no other reason to be going slow other than their own stupid inability.

Too many old people can drive if you ask me lol.

I drive far too fast and recklessly for this to happen to me.

x2

as do i on many occasions!

but when I'm in a chilled mood and drive at or just below speed limit i dont find its common, just with the people who drive the 's4's' when there actually a tdi fwd a4 with massive 20" wheels that look tacky as hell.

but if i do find it, i tend to either

1. sit at 5 mph below

2. wait for their over taking point and cog drop and leave them sitting there thinking....what?

3. keep them on my bumper as long as i can to watch them glow red.

i sometimes go out of my way just to annoy these people more. i know its a bit stupid for me to do it but if they would realise its not gonna get them anywhere then there only a hazard themselves

Back home we call them the "38's". Main reason being you get stuck behind them doing 38mph in a 60. You do an overtake while they're flashing their headlights and shaking their fists at you. You see them disappear in your mirror still doing 38, while you're doing the speed limit.

Then you get into a 30, and they come flying up behind you, to a full on Audi-driver following distanance, still doing 38, past schools, round blind bends and anything else that someone who hasn't pissed themselves lately may consider a hazard.

What you fail to realise is, that not only did these old folk pay for and build the roads, and have as much right to drive as you do according to the authorities, but they're also half deaf, half blind and drugged up to the eyeballs on a cocktail of pills.

The last thing they need is a bully distracting them whilst trying to pilot a lethal weapon.

If you don't have a right hand lane to over take with, you're stuck behind a line of traffic whatever you do. So given that the car in front isn't going anywhere, you're better off dropping back and giving yourself - you, nobody else but your insurance company - some much needed room for error.

One of my neighbours is an elderly woman and there is no effing way she should be driving, she's blind as a bat. Her driveway goes up a hill past the side of my house, she goes from the road into the driveway at no more than 3mph while craned right forward and squinting like I've never seen a human being squint, oh, and she gets absurdly close to my car while she does it.

There was one occasion when she was trying to turn right into her driveway and there was someone facing the opposite way indicating to turn right, she sat for at least 30 seconds waiting for this car to go past her while at the same time the car facing her was waiting for her to pass because she doesn't indicate. She couldn't see an indicate 20 feet on front of her, I would hate to see what her reaction times are like.

I think the most annoying things are when people drive far below the speed limit for no proper reason.

Yes there are some occasions when driving below the speed limit are good, like down a road you arn't familiar with or if you're going round a tight corner.

but in my eyes doing 40 in a 60 is just being too careful to the point of becoming hazardous to other drivers.

As far as tying to play chicken with other cars goes, you should drive to protect your own car. The amount of hassle that is entailed with an accident (Finding new parts, actually getting the insurance claim, listen to their bullshit story and possibly be without a car for a period of time) It's just not worth it.

If you're already driving down a single lane road, just try and tuck yourself into the side as much as you can, then wait for their reaction.

I problem that i really encounter is when i tuck into the side, they think i'm being a dick because i'm not actually that close for the one simple reason, that i dont want to curb my wheels, then i would have to get them repainted etc.

Just my 2p

The speed limit is a LIMIT not a TARGET. They're there for a reason. Overtake where its safe and get on with your life. And if it isn't Safe to overtake at all then maybe you shouldn't be doing higher speeds? Like in a built up area or whatever.

Okay maybe the person in front is being a little over cautious but what gives you the right to push them to go faster, out of there comfortable speed so they may end up having a crash and someone gets killed? Surely your 5 minutes earlier to your destination isn't worth that?

I'm not saying that i personally would overtake them in an unsafe spot, but it makes drivers annoyed, and more likely to do something stupid just because they feel like they have got to get around them

I regularly have to drive to Lincoln maybe 2 or 3 times a week, and it makes more than 5 minutes difference. On a good day where people are mostly sitting between 50mph and 60mph it takes me about 2 hours. On a bad day when you get the unfortunate combination of an old person driving at about 40mph and then a couple of drivers behind them who lack the confidence to overtake. Eventually you end up in a massive line of traffic unable to overtake anything at all. On a day like that I can expect the journey to be more like 3 hours.

And I don't know about you but I value every minute of my life lol.

What the fuck is that car?

^^ Honda Civic. We got them here, there's a stock one down my street.

lol some of these stories are outrageous!

I have been known to overtake a string of car's that are all tailgating one another because none of them have the balls to overtake the slow car. Not done it in the polo mind.

(only if I've got a clear view of the road ahead)
