Just got hold of a beaut coupe and although I love the look of the standard radio, I dont know how long I can put up with Long wave radio and the crackle.

So looking to upgrade the head unit and speakers (ducks and runs for cover), but keeping it as subtle as possible as its quite the minter!

I know I cant really get away from the brightly couloured head units, but do they fit straight in? or would I have to do/buy anything to make them fit?

Rear speakers are 6x4s correct? and is there supposed to be a single one in the centre of the dash?

I dont want to do a full install, but would like to get speakers with good clear bass, not the tinny ones, is this possible in 6x4s?

Never really been in the ICE scene so any info on good quality brands, installation and good sources will be greatly appreciated!!

Another headunit will fit right in and won't be a wiring nightmare due to the car being standard the loom won't be butchered. 6x4" at either side of the shelf and then one in the centre of the dash. Shite as standard and usually dead in this age of car.

Headunit is easy i would just buy one that isn't too flashy and that is majority black rather than silver. Also i find USB units are the best as you don't have CD's flying about the place. Car audio direct has a decent range and they are good to deal with but usually i just find the headunit i want then google shopping it and buy it at the cheapest place.

Custom doorpods are the best way for good sound. Some go stealth shelf and 6x9 speakers but these are fairly frowned upon.

I was gonna suggest a stealth shelf as then you can replace it with stock at a moments notice and you won't have to put up with that tst tst tst tst noise from those tiny 6x4 speakers

Is it worth giving 6x4s a go?? or are they all poor? found some new alpines with 20 rms and 150w on ebay for a tenner...? let me know if I'm just pissing in the wind.

I've used the JBL 6x4 and they are an huge improvement over standard speakers but they certainly aren't earth shatteringly good! :)

Most people just cut the original plug off and wire the new unit in direct...

6x4 wont ever sound amazing...admitedly new ones will be somewhat nicer than the 20 year old ones

consider a mdf parcel shelf , you can contour the top to match the orig one then cover with grey carpet , then fit 6x9 or whatever you fancy , still not audiophile but should have some bass

or get a spare shelf, peel the material off, cut the holes and mount some flush fitting speakers underneath, then re-stick the material with some spray adhesive. It should then look original.

However my personal view would be to upgrade all the 6x4's to decent ones, then invest in a small sub, nothing over the top, it adds the extra bit of bass as you turn the sound up :-D

Incedentely thats basically what i've got in my mk3 at the moment, and i'm pleased with it. Most importantly the interior looks standard apart from the black headunit, and it sounds great. I've got JBL 6x4's and i'm pleased with them, i'm sure you could get better/more expensive speakers but i'm really happy with them.
