Folks, back in July I bought this delightful little number

all the trim off, the seats unbolted - rear glass in the back seat area etc and many parts in a box in the boot - some bare metal showing through where it as rubbed down awaiting paint. Various sections have primer or filler on them. Also the tyres were all completely different sizes. As well as showing up where it had been rattle can'd black by a previous owner.

The previous owner had it as SORN.

However - I didnt realise, when I bought it and the ownership switched to me the SORN ends and you have to re-declare.

I thought it would carry on until the year from previous declaration was up and id just have to SORN it again when the reminder came if I didnt get it back on the road (and taxed) before then.

It will be roadworthy early in the new year - but I dont want to leave it until then as ill get fined and charged for VED since the last sorn ended which is apparently when I bought it. As they will assume it was roadworthy since then - which it still isnt.

So I have declared it sorn now and we will have to see if i get fined.

So if you are new to the SORN'd project game like me dont get caught out.

Sorry if this is all obvious stuff - I just thought the sorn would carry on until due to re-declare.

They say they could fine you.. but I did the exact same thing as you & I haven't heard anything from it.. in fact. The vehicle I had was neither sorn or taxed for three months.

I better ring them as well then, bought my project Golf back in June already sorn and ever realised this.

Had a letter from DVLA confirming SORN.

So hopefully that will be the end of it? Going to watch the post carefully for a bit. I'm hoping SORN ending when a sale happened then re-sorned even with a few months gap is something they overlook?

I was more worried that if I left it until i was ready to tax - they would hit me with a really big fine and back pay road tax to July when I bought it.

None of my other "Car mates" realised SOrn ends when a car is sold and it has to be re-SORN'd.

Thinking about it - the message I wanted to share and so should have entitled the thread was -

"SORN ends when you buy a car, you have to re-SORN when you get it".
