hey people, getting pissed off with this shitty satin black spray job now! lol, I'm liking the look of military paint, mainly desert sand?

wondering how you go about doing it and how much paint ill probably need for an average job on just the outside of the car. i think it comes in 1L, 2.5L or 5L sizes. would i get away with 2.5L?

do you do it the same way as painting walls ect with a roller?

would like to do it white also if i cant get desert sand, providing i can get it.

any suggestions? eric

2.5 should be ok, but your going to need a good primer/undercoat to cover that black unless your stripping to metal?

You can apply it with a roller yes but I'm not sure if these differ from your usual DIY equipment. I should imagine so

yeah i may primer it, I'm not sure yet. it seems to be pretty thick paint so it may cover it anyway, but i spose primer wont hurt (apart from the wallet) haha

changed my mind gonna go with dark blue so i dont have to change the logbook. (was blue originally)

according to that writeup a 2.5L tin will just about do a camper so itl easily do a mk2!

tin of paint with a roller& tray and 5 spare rollers comes to £40 including postage

sadly there are no tips as to 'how to paint my car with a roller' because you should'nt paint paint your car with a roller, its not what the rollers are designed for and car paints arent designed to be applied with rollers so its just going to be a case of it'll come out how it comes out

It's not the obvious way of doing it, but it can actually work rather well. I used to paint commercials with 2k rolled on quite a bit.

i have seen commercial rollers befor and had roberlo come to us a few years ago with a roller on primer which has now been removed from sale as it just didnt work out. as to my bollocks knowlege, having been in the trade for over ten years and working in the family garage from the age of 12 I'm pretty sure i know abit more than some idiot trying to paint his car with a roller! if you were suposed to paint a car with a roller then everyone would be going to b&q and doing it themselves and my buisness wouldnt exsist let alone be able to charge £1800+ for a respray so i can hardly see that I'm talking bollocks, but hey next time someone posts on an OPEN FORUM asking for help and advice then maybe they need to think tey might not get all the answers they want to hear

haha! its wierd how such random colours can work tbh! I'm just amazed at the campervans these guys are roller painting though, thats just something else!

I looked into this too a while back. As with anything home brew, you probably cant expect the best results as by the look of the write up i read, there is still a bit of skill required. However, I look forward to seeing your results. And its dirt cheap too!

It works a lot better on vans because the panels are less contoured.

clearly you dont get my point so i wont waste anymore of my time but there are reasons for why things are done like there done, and yo did state in your first post "any suggestions" which is what i initialy gave so no real need to get arsy, just trying to lend a friendly helping hand as this is my fiel of expetieese (painting cars), also just to add, why bother rollering it on, why not just throw the paint on your car then flatt and buff it up as thats all that thread seems to be basicly sayin (you dont get a finish with the roller but by flatting and buffing)n might save you another £3.27 on buying a roller so your paint job will cost you even less

take his advice i will roller it wether you like it or not! and if you think that good finishes cannot be achieved with this method then i suggest you look at the thread up the top. yeah i need to prep it properly this time instead of doing a quick job!

tbh its so dear because its such a specialist thing that most people arent equipped to do, not because its majorly hard. you get all the stuff and if you have patience you can do it!

I've achieved good finishes with cans and a roller! :-)

my dad roller painted his work van this summer. he just wanted to rust proof it so wasnt bothered about the finish.

anyway, he finished it and it was about as smooth as sandpaper because he used a load of fluffy rollers.

but... he did a few rather thick coats, and i took some 1200 and 1500 grade paper to part of it, then some t-cut and the end result was that it was uber shiney!! (well, a 20" patch of it was)

good luck with it bud, i endevour to do it one day :-D

Only problem now is what colour. Foam roller ftw
