Hi guys, I have a late 2002 Polo 1.4S 3 door (9N), came out this morning to an unlocked car with the front electric windows open. Interior is soaked given all the rain last night. I know 100% I locked it last night.

The car has remote central locking - not sure if that's got something to do with it or not - but it doesn't have the 'convenience locking', i.e. holding the key button on lock or unlock doesn't do anything,

Any ideas?

Check the wiring between the drivers door and the a post. If there is a split in the rubber boot, or it has come away from the body, then it is very likely that this is your problem.

Same thing happened to mine. Turned out the rubber boot had turned into a little swimming pool and had destroyed the connectors.

Hopefully, as it's the first time it's happened, it hasn't gone that far. It's worth getting a can of silicone lube and spraying all the wires and connectors in that area then seal up the boot.

Dixy - spot-on diagnosis, the boot between the a-pillar & the passenger door had come away, so I imagine it was full of water & shorting out. All is siliconed up again, so hopefully it'll be ok now.
