I rather like the CR-Z personally, it's not particularly fast (though about in line with the base spec 1.4 Rocco TSI that costs about 20 grand), but it's bloody cool.

In base spec? If I were going VAG, I'd have a reasonably specced A3, 1.8 TFSI Sport seems to fit.

what is a "sporty" car? i know what a sports car is, it has 2 doors, no roof and a carb fed straight six, but i am not informed on the boxes that must be ticked to make a car "sporty". isn't it a word made up to sell cars on adverts?

if i was fortunate enough to have 20k i'd be sensible and get my priorities right with 3/4 of it and spend the rest on a decent mk2 golf gti or something

But if I had £20k and it had to be a forecourt new car I'd have a RenaultSport Clio 200. Hands down the best hot hatch you can buy.

Sensibly though I'd have a three year old S2000, as I said earlier. Plenty fast enough, more fun than a hot hatch and it makes you feel alive every time you drive it. Buy one with a hard top and never look back. Excellent car.

Buy an Evo/Impreza and you'll find yourself filling up with fuel several times a week, tax is a fortune and while both are faster than the Honda I don't think you'd get many more smiles for the extra cash.

I've got an RS197 clio (shape before 200), its not all that tbh. Its quick in the twisties, but drinks as all the power comes in at 5K (7.5K limit) (current avg 20mpg)

But any of the big power turbo Jap cars will easily drink as much if not more.

RS Clio is one of the best real-world driver's cars I've ever had the pleasure of being behind the wheel of. And there's fuel economy to be had if you don't rag ten shades out of it everywhere you go.

Ooh - I wonder if you can pick up a 135i M Sport Coupe for £20k? That's a fab car too, and so understated considering it'll batter the outgoing Evo and Impreza.

Scirocco is a good by though. Not as involving or as fast as the Clio but a great all-rounder in terms of bang for buck.

Focus RS is a giggle but I wasn't overly sold on it - good fun with the Mountune bits like the RS500 and it looks like a road-going rally car. Very thirsty though.

I'd love to recommend the new Polo GTI but while it's good there are so many better driving cars for the money.

Megane R26R is good if you can find one - a bit hardcore for a daily but one of the best front wheel drive cars you can buy.

Ah well if we're going retard spec on the running costs, there are plenty of 996 Turbos out there for £20k.

That's a 420bhp four wheel drive supercar you can use every day. Yes, the 996 is a bit fugly, but you won't care when you're behind the wheel.

964 is cooler, but the 996 is a massive bargain.

Yeah, there were a lot when i put 15-20K in the search thing. They are ugly tho...
