1.4 tdi tuning

Featured Replies

right I've had my polo 1.4 tdi a few months now and finding setting off up hill abit of a struggle for the little bugger so i was thinking of tuning it, not after much of a gain maybe 110bhp, I've seen a lupo tdi with 125bhp but I'm not sure how this was achieved.

also my mpg figure are alot less than factory stated -

town - 34max

motorway - 44 - 46 max

is there anything that could be done to get both power and fuel consumption down???

i know alot of people are going to say remap etc but I've heard hardware before software too many times now so would try hardware before anything else.

thanks

a remap will be the biggest decider in dropping fuel comsumption, thats as long as everything is working fine on your car.even driving like an idiot shouldnt get them mpg figures. there terrible. whats your driving style like. getting those figures would only be achievable if you was at 5000 rpm all the time. a stock 1.4 shouldnt struggle setting off up a hill.

have you serviced your car?

check to see if the MAF is dead?

no boost leaks

use a diesel fuel cleaner (a good one)

my figures are around 55mpg around town driving, and about 60 - 70 on motorway

a remap will increase torque and fuel will go down, there very worthwhile on turbo diesels. plus you get more power. a remap will add you 25 bhp. more than anything else.

if you are driving like a racer then just be being a little less agressive and more smooth will lower your fuel comsumption alott.

my intercooler was leaking so i got another inc piping that got power back to 75bhp but fuel consumption is still ave 46mpg max motorway. car was serviced the day i got it filters, oil etc, I've been looking at a tuning box for £80 that claims 95bhp and better fuel mileage i was thinking that as its half the price of a map.

how will i know if my MAF "is dead" ??? where is that??

thankyou

I have heard of remaps adding even more, taking power to 115bhp, as well as improving economy. Hardware will never get you that sort of increase for the same money.

the maf is a sensor located on the pipe coming from the airbox. to disconnect it you just have to pull it out. to know if its working pull the switch out and start and drive your car. if you notice you have the same amount of powetr as when it is plugged it, time to replace. this can make a 5 - 6 mpg difference.

tyre preasures too, around 30 - 32

a tuning box will never beat a remap. infact if you have a remap most companies will check your car before doin a map to make sure everythingt is ok

I have a maf sensor & a load of other bits for this & a whole complete car if you are interested in another one lol

still not checked my maf but i did put a uarter bottle of red-ex in the tank and my god thats made a difference!!!!

power is way up and mpg, will clean my maf tomorrow which may help even more hopefully :)

i have this all the time at work, maf are notoriously bad on tdi vw's I've changed 3 this year, when they go it just feels like its got an N/A engine lol

just unplug it and drive, if its better or same change the maf. (or clean first with special maf cleaner, be careful its very delicate. fi you drop it its gone. redex is alright but will have no effect when its all gone from the tank. you need a proper cleaner like bg244. expensive but its good i used it awesokme stuff only need it once

My money would be on the MAF or EGR valve - have you had it diagnosed via VAG com yet? Also, if it hasn't been done, have the fuel filter done and ensure the air filter is nice and clean.

We're tuning PD engines on a regular basis and I can tell you that with our standard stage 1, you can see both power and economy gains as long as you are a sensible driver.

On the 1.4pd 75bhp, a safe gain is 26bhp in our professional opinion.

Do not use a tuning box. I tuned a Freelander TD4 a couple of days before Christmas. The lad had been using a tuning box for about 8 months before it finally knackered his fuel pump. Tuning boxes have only one signal to manipulate (fuel pressure). To make any real power, they have to work that signal so hard that it causes undue stree on the components and causes an imbalance on all inter relating components, ultimately causing the engine to work hotter and harder than it's designed to do.

With a quality remap, you are ensuring that all variables both directy and indirectly related to each other have been recalculated and adjusted to ensure a balanced tune. The guy could feel the difference straight away to be honest.

I've got a 2003 (9no) 1.4 TDi and I've been using a piggy-back Tunit box with a K&N air filter! Power is well up and the torque is what I've been looking for. BG244 is the only one that does the job and I've tried them all...

ordered some bg244 your right it is expensive lol, i have a new problem :/ when accelerating and changing gear or coming off the accelerator i hear a whistle, when i re-accelerate it goes :/ could this be turbo on its way out??

regards

BG244 is a very good product actually, we had quite a few members try it on our forum. It's not a solvent like the other cleaners such as millers, forte or redex.. so basically when those run through your system, any benefit they provide is finished once they've run through the fuel lines.

The BG244 however has active ingredients designed to react at lower temperatures. So basically they stick to the insides of pipes, valves etc and will gradually clean reacting with the lower temps in places like EGR valves etc.

It's not a magic potion though, and there is still no substitute for a good servicing regime and using decent oil and fuel. Some of our members are also using some 2 stroke with their diesel, and that's regarded as one of the trades best kept secrets.

MTM offer a remap that will gain you a 35bhp increase and 240ft lbs of torque.

Its about £400 and takes 3 days though because they have your ecu right out.

I think thats what I'm going to go for.

I would qualify that with whoever that outfit is.

These cars run a Bosch EDC15 series ECU, and even the cheap chinese £20 ebay clone tools can flash them. There is absolutely no need for anyone to remove the ECU to tune it - it won't give you any more or less variables to work with.

As for making 35bhp (safely) out of a 75bhp 1400PD engine, I would really want to see the AFR and logs to ensure it's not about to break something within the week (which I strongly suspect it would). Tuning is a funny game, just always qualify what you are actually getting and normally when it sounds too good to be true, it quite possibly is. Also have your outputs verified on another dyno. As times are tough.. the claims of gains are getting wilder.

just pour the bg244 into full tank. works great!

r-texh are a good mapping company. i was quoted around 200 quid which included rolling road. plus they will check your car is up to the extra power before proceeding.

Its the amount of PEA that BG use that make it stand out from the rest of the stuff like Forte,Redex ect. :-)

Using 2S in diesel has caused a massive debate on the Toyota forum that I'm also a member of!!! I dont think I'll be using it in my Avensis T-180 tbh as I dont want any problems with the D-CAT :-(

It's also created a big debate on the Accord forums and Civic forums, and the Honda ictdi is a pretty sophisticated beast with very tight tolerances. However all the people against have been the ones that never tried it (me included although I don't run an Accord anymore). However everyone that has now tried it has nothing but praise for it.

Tbh... I've never tried it but some have and swear by it! I just cant bring myself using it as I've had a brand new engine and DPF and D-CAT fitted under Toyota extended warranty for the known issue with the 2.2 D4-D head gasket issue and EGR valve. I think that I'll just stick to BG244 and millers as I always run the Car on Shell V-Power derv with Mobil 1 ESP in the motor :-D

Shell V Power FTW to be honest. Got my new 5 series delivered 6 weeks ago, and it's run on nothing but since. My Accord ran it continously for almost 70k miles and I never suffered any of the other issues our members were having with egr valves, smoking etc. VPower diesel is a GTL and totally unique compared to other products on the market, and definitely not a gimmick.

V-Power is a (Gas to Liquid)semi-synth fuel (For want of better words) and has twice the additive as "Normal" derv! What a lot of oil burners tend not to know is that the mpg you get out of this stuff compaired to the normal stuff is amazing! and when you factor in the V-Power club rewards points (Money off vouchers) its as near to dame it on price to bog standard out of the ground fuel. Best stuff in the World in my eyes :-)
