hello

iv recently just bought a golf mk3 gti after owning a 1.4 8v 6n polo.

the golf is not living up to my expectations and considering selling it for a valver 6n polo ?

just wondering if anyone has owned both/ driving both and their thoughts/preferences

Driven the mk3 GTI and it is shit, handles like a wet paper bag, heavy, slow I can carry on.

As much as i also dislike 6n's i would own a 6n over a mk3 golf of any spec.

nothing wrong with the golf it self its just not what i was expecting therefore disapointed

You obviously weren't driving a MK3 then as they are 2.0 haha. (making things even worse!)

I presume you bought an 8v? Funny thing is the 8v's are 35bhp down on the 16v, slower, worse on fuel yet, for me at least, cheaper to insure.

16v 6n will feel much quicker and more fun to drive, although on paper actually slower than an 8v mk3.

Nah I meant the OP must have bought an 8v!

The 8v GTi's were a 2.0 2e or AGG engine code and the 16v's were ABF's.

come on the golf is 0.3 seconds quicker to 60 than a valver with a few MPH top end. its so similar it doesn't matter but the 6n will be lighter on its feet. but the weight difference isn't that drastic.

Aaaand the point of that post was? You've just basically said what I said that a mk3 is quicker than a valver but the 6n will be more fun to drive. And i never said anything about weight difference.

Although i suppose in your opinion the OP should have bought a 16v 6n2 cos by the way you go on about them they are the greatest car ever made. Just out of interest have you ever been in anything other than 6n2's and mk2 polos?

I've had a valver 6n and it was up there with one of the worse cars i have ever owned and i've had over 20 vws, the 1.6 glx was a better daily. MK3 8V gti's were a real let down heavy and slow better going for a 16v golf mk3 or polo gti.

alright darling, i was stating its not noticeably faster. nope never even seen anything other than a 6n2 or mk2, absolutely blinkered. I didn't know other cars existed

Get a polo gt, with breathing mods and a chip they're quicker than everything mentioned in this thread bar mk3 gti 16v

Screw all those. MK2 Golf GTI all the way. Even a standard 8v will walk all over any of those cars. Drive a sorted 16V and you'll wonder why you ever had anything else :-) As soon as my insurance goes down, i will get a MK2 GTI.

Shouldn't have went for an 8V. 16V is much more fun.

yeah i would love a mk2 golf but cant find any in good enough condition for my price range. my friend pointed me in the direction of a ibiza cupra mk3 (the boxier one) any bad points about those ?

If you can afford a decent mk3 cupra, then you can definately find a decent.mk2 golf within budget.

Prices are pretty high on them these days but bargains can still be had,l its just a case of keeping a good look out

Think this thread needs some balance.

Think it all depends what you want in a car. I quite like my Mk3 8v (up til when the timing belt stripped itself).

40 mpg driving to work on country lanes, would still return 35 mpg at 90, decent heater, comfy seats, well geared, decent stereo as standard, etc etc. Not gonna deny it's slow though.

Handling wise, it's got a Weitec kit on it and is not too bad. I'd maybe go so far as to say it's good. After all, it's just a slightly heavier Mk2 Golf (less than 100 kg depending on model) with a stiffer shell, wider track, wider tyres and bigger brakes. If it was just a "Golf 2.0" I think it would be a really good all round car. VW should just never have badged it as a GTI much the same as the Mk4 of the same ilk.

Oh... the brakes are really really good and the ABS is quite well judged, unlike a lot of cars I've driven.
